A collection by plantsman Nick Macer of Pan Global Plants of this choice species which has awaited introduction since Frank Kingdon Ward first discovered it over 70 years ago. Striking deeply lobed palmate leaves held on long spotted stems with late season pink flowers. Visually arresting clump, to be honest. Overwintered in a Seattle garden with a wee bit of bark mulch during the heinous winter of 2021-22 which took out a variety of hitherto untouched plants. Mulch crown to prevent frost from penetrating during winter.

This incomparable Lipstick Vine species is comment-provoking even out of flower with abruptly pendulous branches holding thick, long leaves. Amazing find by Darrell Probst in China who found this one plant growing under shrubs where it had a 4' flowering stem which he estimated had up to 1500 flowers! This is unique in the genus in having indeterminate flowering - it just keeps going for months! Spidery yellow flowers keeps bringing it on sprawling stems.

Pinecone Thistle. Pretty cool 6"-12" tall plant from dry pine woods and wastelands in southern Europe and northern Africa. The spineless gray-green, thistle-like leaves, are felted gray-white underneath and are a perfect accompaniment to the art project flowers. Tufts of filamentous purplish flowers erupt from hefty cones of overlapping, feathered brown scales. Beautiful conversation plant for the rock garden and while perennial, it is short-lived, so save some seeds.

A Hinkley collection of this very collectible Trillium relative from China. The 7-12 narrow leaves are arranged like spokes on a wheel and have short deep purple petioles. The flowers are the typical Paris expression of atypical nonconformity with lots of green and spidery filaments. We have not keyed this yet to verify the name but it is quite rhizomatous and is not of the widespread polyphylla clan.

Choice shrubby flowering cherry that gets to 8' and as wide. Makes a mass of zig-zag twigs in winter followed by profuse white flowers with pale pink calyces, and all the hot colors in fall from rich yellow to rich purple. Hard to find fault with this and there is too much of that going around nowadays anyway. Excellent for bonsai.

From manic hybridizer Darrell Probst comes this herbaceous Asian Hydrangea relative. Softer blue than D. caerulea but with leaves showing a distinct Camel Toe cleft attesting to D. bifida affinity. (Had a friend who was Wardrobe Mistress for PNW Ballet and Camel Toes were her bane) The fertile flowers on this are a study in intricacy and worth bending over for. I meant that the plant is short and not because it is 16 bucks! Sheesh. Can't believe you were thinking that. This likes some light shade a good soil that doesn't dry but drains.

This natural hybrid of one of the classic South African bulb genera is endemic to Cape Province, and you'd be hard pressed to find it much further than that native range even in cultivation, luckily we have excellent connections like Michael Wickenden who generously shared it with us. Bladelike foliage, while nice, is unlikely to wow. The flowers however can grow in great spikes of up to 6 1/2 ft tall! Individual florets can come in red or pink and look rather similar to a more trumpeted Hesperantha, corollas flaring out to a star shaped opening. Extremely rare offering of this NW Argentina-SE Bolivia version of the Chilean Crinodendron patagua. This large shrub to small 20'-30' multi-trunked tree has evergreen leaves and small white bell flowers. Quite fast growing and is one of the primary species in the Podocarpus parlatorei forests. Time will tell on hardiness but thus far it has done well in our garden, handling the harsh temps of the 2023 winter with aplomb. This is a compact Angel's Fishing Rod but it is a lunker in flower power. This makes a dense evergreen grassy clump which has lots of flower stems bearing pendulous fared pink bells in mid summer. We have this out in our sunny border and it has been great. Very floriferous and gently self-sowing plus it is deer resistant.
