From Guizhou Province comes this collection of Chain Fern where it grew in association with Rhododendron irroratum and Viburnum cylindricum among other goodies. An awesome fern in the garden with fronds that can be 4'-7' long which arch low over the ground and which are salmon colored as they are just unfurling. This is a rare wild collection and one we propagate quite slowly by the 1-3 bulbils that accompany each imposing frond and so have a very limited number each year. Semi-evergreen in zone 7 where mulching the crown well in winter is advised to evergreen in warmer zones. Likes it moist. Best one we ever saw was at Linda Cochran's famed old garden on Bainbridge Island where she had a huge specimen luxuriating in her rich moist compost at the foot of an imposing bamboo clump.
Staggeringly impressive recent introduction of this Solomon Seal species from - wait for it - Vietnam. This is similar to our favorite Polygonatum huanum (formerly as kingianum) but is just more of everything that is good. Large red flowers snug the whorled leaves on stems which reached 15' tall this year in the garden, and which remain green for us until temps drop below 20F. These are young plants but worth the wait!
One of the darkest of the cristata selections, the violet-blue petals are made to appear even darker by the little thumbprint of yellow and white at their bases. A small but mighty little woodland creeper which would revel in bright shade or morning sun. The thin rhizomes trundle along on the surface and are plenty hardy so don't bury them in mulch!
Florida bellwort. A delicate woodland wildflower from the
southeast. Pale yellow nodding flowers with twisting tepals appear in
early-mid spring. Appreciates a rich, well-drained soil of average
moisture in a shaded setting. Will spread slowly and intermingle
politely with other woodland growers. Perfect for the naturalized
woodland border.
This is a lovely thing we received from Ellen Hornig at the late Seneca Hills Nursery in New York where she was able to grow this thanks to deep lake-effect snow cover. Looking perfectly intermediate between Dierama and Crocosmia, this is the perfect choice if you are wanting a soft pink Crocosmia but can't find one.
This collection by Crug Farm from Fansipan in Vietnam of this very distinctive clumping grass is especially yummy with showy pink flowers in this form. The evergreen leaves are bold, broad and lightly pleated with the flower heads mingling among the upper reaches of the leaves. Solidly dramatic!
A Bee Balm native to the Ocoee River in Tennessee, formally described as a new species thanks to the work by botanist Aaron Floden. Nice white flowers on what for us has been a shorter plant of 18" or so, but we expect it to be taller in the garden.
Rare plant found only in limited areas in central Honshu, Japan where it likes the forest fringes in the subalpine areas and is known as hiiragi-sou or holly tree-leafed weed. Hiiragi-sou sounds better than the translation. This selection has dark blue flowers and is a deciduous clumper to 16" tall - very nice!
We received this labeled as Begonia sp. Guizhou 2011 but which we strongly suspect is a Mark Weathington Taiwan collection in 2010. We have the latter from Mark and the two are identical. A compact species to be sure, with small pale green, angel's wing leaves held aloft by short stems. Pink flowers. Hardy in our area mulched during winter.
A seed collection from China from the vaunted plantsman Bjornar Olsen who has introduced an incredible number of rare Chinese plants to cultivation via his seed collections. This rare smaller Solomon Seal is one of those plants which we are pleased to offer. The long greenish-white bells are nicely displayed and not hidden by foliage. A good increaser as the keen-eyed among you instantly noted by the stems crowding the pot edge in the photo of one of our stock pots.
Higher elevation Chinese species favoring a moist and rich with compost spot in part sun. This has long been a favorite species of ours with its pendant rose-purple flowers held on long pedicels heavily coated in white mealy farina and carried aloft on tall stems up to 2 to 3 feet. Sue grew this in northern VT.
A most impressive fern and one we've been privileged to see in its native haunts in China. This makes magnificent large long fronds, coppery when young and when mature, terminating in a single fuzzy small ball or gemma, which will become a new fern.
Uncommon and choice dwarf Thyme we introduced to the US when we brought this little gem home from an alpine nursery in Scotland. A very fine plant of compact habit and the expected profusion of flowers which while not red, are a vividly intense neon fuchsia-infused magenta. Find that on a paint chip!
The correctly named true species as what is generally seen in gardens are forms of Cardiocrinum giganteum. The only deviation from the key of 3-5 flowers are some with up to 9 flowers which we attribute to easy living in our garden and variation within the species. This is most closely allied to C. cordatum from Japan, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands and has similarities in height at 4'-7' tall along with the distinctive grouping of leaves in the middle part of the flowering stem. New growth in spring is a brilliant copper-red and non-flowering bulbs go dormant quite early in June. White tepals are greenish-white at base with interior first touched in soft yellow-green and then deep within, purple. And fragrant late in the day. A hybridizing dead end with no hope of winning the Lhasa Zingiberaceae Club Roscoea show and getting its time on the podium with adoring retirees from around the world ooh-ing and ahh-ing from their couches. Nonetheless these are sweet plants with their own appeal, just like your friendly mutt. Short with red stems and green leaves and flowers like that of "Red Gurkha" but with a varying degree of violet tinge.
A Mexican species and rhizomatous type with leaves that while not as large as the namesake Heracleum do rival in it in incised shape, and far outdo it in leaf patterning with a edge spattered in a dark reddish black. Could prove hardy in mild Zone 8 climates!
Choice selection of the Wood Anemone with flowers densely packed with numerous small white petals which appear all white at first but as the flowers mature or awaken, a central blue eye is revealed which is quite delightful. I go through a similar slow process every morning and tell myself that it is the same delightful end result.
A collection by Tony Avent from South Korea as Polygonatum odoratum but it has been found to be a different species and one seldom seen in gardens. Familiar arching stems to 3' with narrow white bells tipped in green hanging underneath. These flowers are scented with lemon and is most noticeable as you stroll the garden with your morning coffee. Zone 4 to zone 8b.
Our collection from the far eastern Himalaya of this tender but beautiful Lipstick Vine species. This loves good drainage as it is found growing in the tree canopy as well as mossy rock faces. This will make an impressive house plant and would look fantastic in a hanging basket as it will spill. A rare collection from a relatively unexplored area.
A very good and stable selection from Japan of this little woodland creeper. Dark green leaves are well-marked with feathered yellow tips and in spring this has pendant white starry flowers. This will increase to create a definite bit of visual velcro in the garden because as your eye roams the plants, it will stop abruptly on this one.
