A pretty little thing from the alpine world. The genus name comes from the Italian for 'Little Coins' which fairly represents the diminutive rosettes of perfectly circular evergreen foliage. For the less money-motivated the bright purple-pink flowers held a few inches above the flowers call to mind an egregious fringed lampshade from the lava lamp days. Closely related to primulas and happy with much the same treatment.

Excellent selection of this species in the acaulis group which has large flowers of a particularly good dark blue on long stems well, long for this species anyway. Evergreen mats in rich moist soil in full sun with main bloom in spring and some rebloom in late summer. Endangered species in its native Balkan Dinaric Alps.

A new offering for us here at Far Reaches, and a solid addition to any Pleione collection. This has a handsome deep magenta flower with a fringed lip and dark red spotting in the throat. As with all Pleiones, this increases freely by small bulblets, and needs excellent drainage.

One of the largest flowered selections of Gentiana acaulis, this is truly a showstopper with its big, deep blue trumpets in spring and lighter reblooms after. It may owe its vigor to hybridity but whatever the reason, we are down with it! Moist, rich soil in sun and stand back and enjoy. Gentiana acaulis 'Maxima Enzian' is likely the same as Enzian is German for Gentian.

Eyes that look like these would be a little more concerning than dazzling but on an iris they are well worth a futile staring contest. This selection of I. unguicularis has an extended area of white and purple striping at the base of the petals that provides a stunning contrast that is sure to draw the eye, or to the more imaginative among us conjure images of eyes you might see at a really wild music festival.

The one-spotted form of the classic Giant snowdrop. Maintains the broad grey-green leaves and buoyantly rounded flowers of the species but does away with the upper green band generally seen on the inner segments in favor of just the apical wishbone green marking giving a distinctly snowier and elegantly clean appearance.

This species of the uniformly winning genus hails from Southeast Asia and India. Glossy evergreen foliage slightly longer than many of its fellows paired with fragrant white flowers nestled nicely in the leaf axils across much of the stem make it a solid choice of medium size shrub for a relatively mild spot.

A fine selection with seasonally variable light blue trumpet flowers which we received from our friend Urs Baltensperger. Most folks instantly gravitate towards the impossibly dark blue selections and while these are critical to have, consider how much darker they will look with this growing alongside. Just sayin'. I liked the old name of Damacanthus which is what I blurt out when weeding around the spinier Bear's Breeches in the garden. Odd little deciduous woody subshrub of congested twisted stems and stoloniferous habit. It has grown on us over the years and has been useful in the plant version of "Stump the Chump".

Unit price perNative to Chile, this is in the Solanaceae and will become a 4'-6' evergreen shrub with drooping and narrowly tubular yellow flowers with long exserted stamens. The foliage is a bit unpleasant when crushed - and only then - which makes us think it will be deer proof. Has proved hardy outside in our PT frost pocket for a good decade now, may get cut back by the fiercest winters but bounds back quickly. Good for a sunny position and was given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.

This excellent hardy orchid is one we received many years ago from our late Plant Guru, Jerry John Flintoff as Dactylorhiza incarnata subsp. africana. Well, that has been merged into D. elata and it looks right to us but we are not orchid botanists. Vigorous, with green leaves and richly colored flowers. Native to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia in north Africa, dallying on some islands in the Med (smart orchid!) and jumping to France, Spain and Portugal up to Belgium and the Netherlands.

Choice selection of the Wood Anemone with flowers densely packed with numerous small white petals which appear all white at first but as the flowers mature or awaken, a central blue eye is revealed which is quite delightful. I go through a similar slow process every morning and tell myself that it is the same delightful end result.

Unnamed or lost name selection of Wood Anemone we received from plantsman non pareil John Flintoff some years back. This is distinct from others we grow as the white flowers have a reddish pink reverse to the petals which is particularly effective as these nod a bit and you get to enjoy the nice backside. These hardy orchids seed around the nursery which is a very good thing as we have never got one to come up from seed we have intentionally planted. This will be pink to purple but sometimes a white one sneaks in. This is basically a bulb that goes summer dormant but appreciates ample moisture when growing. Likely some species like fuchsii may also be an option here in this Lucky Dip.

We presume this is simply a good form of Dactylorhiza maculata as the leaves are broader and the purple-pink flowers held in fatter heads than many of the forms we see around. A good plant and one we have slowly increased by division and now have a scant few to offer. Leaves are nicely spotted.

Butterfly Iris. Described by Sarah in our mail order dept as "super precious" which is spot on. In the Iris family from Tasmania and New South Wales, this makes a substantive clump of thin evergreen leaves with tall wiry stems holding enchanting white flowers well above the leaves. Grown for decades in the Seattle garden of Jeanette Kunnen.

This was a purchase by the Miller Botanic Garden in the late 90's from the RHS store at Wisley and to our knowledge, is not available in this country and very scarce elsewhere. An early bloomer, in fact, it is flowering now this late December in its pots sitting outside unprotected as we have had a relatively mild winter so far. Huge flowers resembling an elwesii Whittall Group but it isn't according to Galanthophiles we know. Increases well and a good performer in the garden. Yes, it is one bulb.

From the cloud forests of Panama and South America where it grows on trees in accumulations of decomposed debris in crotches. Finally, an upside to crotch debris! Essentially a neotropical blueberry, this had been placed in Vaccinium a time or two. Small white to pinkish flowers with similar colored edible fruit. Frost sensitive, great plant where that is not concern. Otherwise, this will be a fantastic hanging basket that can be overwintered in sunroom or greenhouse.

Soft pale blue flowers on this clone which we brought in from the UK a few years ago. This species seems a necessary part of the spring woodland garden and the twiggy rhizomes will in time form a dense floriferous carpet with flowers backed by deeply segmented green leaves.
