Foetid Adders Tongue. How can you not love a plant with a name like this? Trillium relative native to the coastal Redwoods of California, this ranks as one of our most favorite plants. Sure the intricate early spring flowers smell of gym locker wet dog but how cool! And what foliage!
Second generation plants from our collection from a grassy bank above a stream in Tibetan Yunnan where it was growing in moist rich topsoil at around 10000'. This is a choice herbaceous member of the Barberry Family with rich darkly mottled new growth and broad sharply lobed palmate leaves up to a foot across with a crystalline pink chalice of a flower giving way to large red fruits in fall. Gorgeous moist shade plant to 3' tall although we've seen this same collection at a friend's garden pushing 4' tall. Hardy to Zone 5 and best of all - it's easy. These are very large flowering size plants of a size that is seldom if ever available. Beautiful as a single specimen plant or especially effective in drifts of 50.
Incredibly exciting rare ornamental Araliad from Taiwan where it can reach 30 feet tall. Don't be scared by that as it will likely not attain those dimensions in your garden at least while you are the gardener! Broadly orbicular leaves with 3-5 shallow lobes on stout branches makes this a riveting centerpiece. These are likely the first seed-grown plants ever offered in North America and best in mild gardens zone 8 and above. This grows naturally with Schefflera taiwaniana and Fatsia polycarpa and we observed this in Taiwan growing in light to moderate shade but here in the maritime cool sun Northwest, this will handle full sun. Protect these youngsters the first winter or two - it will be so worth it!
There really isn't anything like this - a plant with no comparables. Early spring yellow stars followed by leathery lobed green leaves in a dense low mound. It is the early yellow flowers that steal the show in part because they have so little competition and in part because they are so unique. As the season progresses, the yellow bracts turn to green and look like perfect green flowers well into summer. We did a little plant profile on this for Fine Gardening spring of 2011.
This dandy Salvia came to us from the garden of Dan Post of whom we hold in the highest possible esteem. He has trialed this under intense deer pressure and it gets a thumbs up in all the critical categories. Easy, hardy, deer-proof and lovely. Bushy big leaves to 2' and tall branched flowering stems to 40" with blue violet flowers splotched in white, touched in yellow.
This is what we have offered previously as Soldanella species. It looks to be a match to the Bulgarian Soldanella rhodopaea and the seedlings come true so we are reasonably confident of the identification. Soldanella is a Primrose relative native to the high meadows in the mountains of Europe. This is one we received from Collector's Nursery with dark violet flowers - very choice! Evergreen and clumping, this takes the same conditions as Primroses.
Pretty awesome new hybrid that came up at Suncrest Nurseries in CA thanks to some inspired work by the bees. This outshines its parents with gray-blue leaves and branched erect stems to 3' holding lots of lavender-blue flowers for many weeks. This can take drier conditions and the vermin deer don't like it.
Awesome little plant with fresh winter foliage which gives way to 8"-12" tall dense stems with an improbable number of pure white double flowers. Goes summer dormant so don't panic although we still do. Cool plant native to the UK and Europe and favoring vernally wet areas.
Tiny-leafed hybrid of Soldanella carpatica and S. pusilla . This very small scale little creeper with tiny evergreen leaves surprises in spring with over-achieving light lavender fringed bells. Similar to 'Spring Symphony' but flowering a bit earlier. One of the easiest Soldanella to grow. This is one we picked up in the UK a few years back.
This is the Type A of the Soldanella clan which is related to Primroses. It spreads faster, has more flowers, is more vigorous and has more hair on it's petioles - what a show-off! But hey - great rounded evergreen foliage and the light purple fringed fringed flowers would not be out of place in Fairyland. Our friend June Sinclair has this growing in the moss and forest duff atop old second growth stumps and logs in her fabulous woodland garden on Hood Canal. We come home from visiting her with a bad case of stump envy.
Fantastic little gem from the high mountains of Taiwan collected by our friend Philip MacDougall. Our mama plant from him is several years old and is a compact dome 2' tall and wide. Early summer has this adorned in small heads of dark pink buds which open to dense heads of clustered flowers which have a pink throat with a corolla edge of pale pink to near white. Will gently self-seed but not overly so and who could begrudge a few extras.
A less commonly encountered species which calls the Rhodopi and Pirin Mts of Bulgaria home. This has lavender-blue flowers finely fringed in very narrow petals on a flower that is more widely open than related species. Small rounded evergreen leaves are a pleasure all year but it’s the flowers that makes your toes tingle in spring.
Red Birds in a Tree. Sometimes we like common names and this is one of those time. New Mexico native where it grows in moist canyons. Small white-lipped red tubular flowers in clustered congeniality throughout the summer to the delight of the nectar feeders. Likes to lean on other plants.
A pretty little thing from the alpine world. The genus name comes from the Italian for 'Little Coins' which fairly represents the diminutive rosettes of perfectly circular evergreen foliage. For the less money-motivated the bright purple-pink flowers held a few inches above the flowers call to mind an egregious fringed lampshade from the lava lamp days. Closely related to primulas and happy with much the same treatment.
Superbly vigorous 2nd generation hybrid of S. carpatica x S. pusilla from the vaunted Edrom Nursery in Scotland and we may be the first to introduce this to North America. If you are into small ornament of ingenious construction, the maximization of minimalism, a totally improbable flower to foliage ratio - we have you so covered! Soldanella are alpen sophisticates that should be grown more in northern cool climates. This hybrid retains the vigor of the comparatively coarse S. pusilla and brings in superior flowers and foliage of S. carpatica. Evergreen tiny round leaves and 4" salmon pink flower stems with lavender-blue fringed bells in early spring is an impeccable combination. Loose gritty-humusy soil in dappled light or morning sun is great.
Soldanellas completely bewitch us wih their dual charms of excellent evergreen foliage and incredibly cute flowers. When these little guys flower, we just smile because this is such a little overachiever with its lavender fringed flowers in April. Reddish leaf petioles and leaf undersides are subtle allure.
Beautiful Styrax from southern China and a nice infusion of new genetics to go along with the forms already in cultivation. Vigorous grower of pleasing habit and not overly large at 20'-25' with profuse white flowers of good size for this species. Small nut-like fruit follow the flowers. A favorite genus of ours.
Superb little performer from China that is like some sort of impish Thalictrum with short stems to 6" and open umbels of blue and white flowers. The main show is in late spring but the flowers keep coming all summer. Just a sweet bit of conversational perfection along the edge of a path.
We briefly offered this as Plectranthus but Cody, our taxonomist fixed that. From a meadow area at 10,000' in Sichuan with companions of Reineckea, Paris, Roscoea, Aconitum and Salvia. This mysterious beguiler will have small rounded hairy leaves with many stems and myriad motes of lavender-white flowers.
It is always a real treat to see this come into flower in late spring and early summer with bright white buttons of double flowers held on thin wires of stems above the narrow green foliage. This comes from the mountains of Europe and may likely be the closely related species pusilla based on its narrow leaves. Great rock garden plant and zone 5 hardy.
