This charmer with white unarmed Thistle-like flowers may well be ssp. insularis but there is a dearth of both information as well as time to review that information. Maybe this winter when the plants are dormant. Under a foot high with nice showy white flowers in mid to late summer.

Bold gray-green foliaged Chinese Salvia collected by plantswoman June Sinclair. Deciduous species and tough as nails. Multiple arms of flowering stems splay out from the leafy crown bearing many rich purple tubular pouchy flowers. This has been a trooper in our garden. We previously offered this as S. bulleyana but are refining our best guesses. Oh to have more time with a hand lens and the Flora of China.

Least Alpine Snowbell. Perhaps the daintiest Soldanella, we have this from three different sources as Soldanella minima 'Alba', S. austriaca 'Alba' and S. carpatica 'Alba' and can see no difference between the three and are putting them under the umbrella of Soldanella minima 'Alba' based on the "minima" size of the leaves and plant. How's that for technical taxonomy? Allied to Primula and native to the eastern Alps where it grows in low turf, rock outcrops and crevices. This is the less-common white form and while smaller by half or more than the more familiar species, it is just as tough as the full-sized versions, despite being an ideal choice for the fairy garden. Light shade to morning sun.

In the Solanaceae or 'Tater Family, this deciduous perennial gets many stems that start blooming almost upon emergence in early spring with thimble-shaped chocolate flowers that are yellowish on the inside. Very cool. This likes part sun and is broader than tall at 2' x 3'. It has a nice little overlap with some of the black flowered Hellebores as it is really coming into its own as they are starting to tail off so there is a clever couple of weeks at least.

Second generation plants from our collection from the Cangshan, Yunnan in 1997. This was midway down the mountain sprawling among and on top of a tapestry of 4'-8' shrubs. The red fruit with brilliant pinnate scarlet foliage was pure eye candy. Expect multiple trunks with a liberal interpretation of vertical. An excellent Mountain Ash for smaller gardens.

A very good form of the species collected by Dan Hinkley in China. All parts - leaves, scape or flower stem, flowers - larger than typically found in the species at least when compared to the 8 or 9 clones we grow. Fresh grass green leaves are marked in silver and the up to 20" + flower stems bears a snowstorm of simple white flowers with their diagnostic longer lower two petals which places this species in Section Irregulares. This will thrive in the moist shade garden but prefers light to bright shade.

Dwarf Mountain Ash. Our collection of the grand little 2' species from NW Yunnan where we found it mingling about in a little wooded copse with Nomocharis aperta as a friend. Creamy white flowers in clusters followed by pinkish red fruit. Decent fall color as well.

From Hubei comes this smaller form of Saxifraga stolonifera which, before taxonomic lumping, might have been called S. veitchiana. Found growing in moss on a shaded cliff face in Abies fargesii forest. This will spread by strawberry-like stolons and makes a sweet little evergreen groundcover with airy white flowers.

Stunning thin-leafed variant on the typical form of the species which usually sports leathery leaves perhaps 4X wider than this rare selection from the Witch Hazel Family. This does not seem as determinedly upright as the typical species so expect a multi-stemmed textural delight. Small yellowish flowers with reddish anthers in late winter won't stop traffic but are still darned welcome.

Exceptional Mountain Ash form our collection on the summit of Leigongshan in Guizhou where this was a multi-trunked small tree/large shrub to 10' with nice clusters of white berries. This species is being grown in the UK but they have yet to put a name to it. From the highest point in its range. Freakin' Cool!

This was an interesting Mountain Ash with entire leaves which we found in the Dayaoshan in Guizhou. We had seen other entire leafed Sorbus on the trip which seemed to fit into Sorbus meliosmifolia but this was obviously different. This had a smoother surface to the leaves without impressed veins and a broader and more open habit on what was a small tree in the wild. The fruit was perhaps not fully ripe when we picked it as it was green going to russet. Surely good to zone 6 at least.

Nice Sedum from 10000' in Mexico that has more cojones than you might think handling 10F here just fine. This has yellow flowers in late winter-spring from gray-blue rosettes on lax stems evocative of Echeveria on a stick. Some compulsives cut back after blooming to tighten up rosettes but we go with the flow.

This is one of our favorite little dwarf shrubs that totally rocks the rock garden. Especially in the rock garden. Slow, slow growth, densely twiggy, small heavily textured leaves and clusters of deep pink flowers in mid summer makes this a great choice for containers or that small special place. A 15 year old plant might be 16" tall but probably shorter.

Grass Trigger Plant. Gorgeous and fascinating perennial found in Tasmania and Australia. Tidy perfection of evergreen grassy foliage speaks to a refined distillation of Aloe and Agave and the unexpected flamboyant spike of multitudinous pink flowers is over the top. There are sticky hairs under the flowers which can trap gnats and absorb those tasty insect nutrients. The pollination mechanism is fiendish. The stamens are cocked behind the flower and when an insect attempts to feed on the nectar, it trips the trigger, whipping the stamens forward resulting in the pollen-loaded anthers delivering a sucker punch to the insect, showering it with pollen. Can tolerate dry conditions and happiest in good drainage.

A South American Blue-Eyed Grass but since this has white flowers, would it be a White-Eyed Grass? Why not? We received our original starts of this from a keen Cape Cod plantsman and it definitely has merit. The foliage is fine and of a densely grassy habit of an invited fresh Spring green. Rare and choice goody that Jim Fox brought back to us from England. Surprisingly hardy, this shocks in a genus full of yellows and whites by having screaming hot pink daisies in summer. Don't plant it with the red Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' like we did - a memorable combo for garish bad color combinations that still sends me bolt upright in bed. We can only paraphrase Bob Brown's perfect description as the plant did come from his nursery "The color reminds me of an Indian brothel. Not that I would know," We mulch ours in winter just to be on the safe side which is easy as it is dormant.

Unit price perThe ticklingly named Prawn Sage (unexpected culinary pairing or wizened crustacean?) sports prawn red flowers typical of the genus but with the added flair of attractively felted leaves highlighted by a bright white underside. These were wild collected by Ben Kamm of Sacred Succulents as a part of his effort to source and distribute ethnobotanical plants of the Andes. To that end they like it dry and sunny, the hardiness is also a bit limiting but these are easily grown from cuttings to provide a self-perpetuating supply of annuals in colder climates

This species was only recently described by botanist Julian Shaw in 2012 from a collection in Hoang Lien Son range on the second summit trail of Phansi Pu in Vietnam. These are second-generation seed-grown plants from a 2011 recollection by Floden-Mitchell & Wynn-Jones. Discovered and introduced by Bleddyn Wynn-Jones with the expected evergreen leaves and early season scented white flowers. These are young plants.
