From great plant friends in Scotland, this showy cross of two fine Candelabra Primrose species garnered accolades when they used this to great effect in a display show garden. Colors are widely variable and size can be a bit shorter than the parents but literally, all are good and work well together. Now if only politicians............
Attractive cousin to blueberries growing in the trees of Thailand's northern mountains. Sometimes seen offered as a hybrid clone 'Red Elf', this is typical hosseana which is a small evergreen shrub with dark red flowers that can take light frost. The fruit is edible and would be nice sprinkled on Thai Beef Salad, Phla Nuea.
Nice red-orange flowers really puts on a show later in August which comes at a time when some of the other reddish varieties have finished flowering. Named for Phillipa Browne who is a Crocosmia hybridizer in the UK. We're certain she didn't name this after herself and that a fellow nurseryman chose to honor her work in this way.
A plant this diminutive just can't be this sassy but Ione Hecker is obviously the English equivalent of Dolly Parton because this is a lot in a little package! Finely cut gray leaves in a dense mound with surprisingly large flowers that are a blue-hued pink with rich fuchsia striations leading to a magenta purple eye. A class act in a trough or rock garden and it is remarkably hardy. This was selected by Ione Hecker from a batch of seedlings raised by E. B. Anderson and is a hybrid between O. laciniata and O. enneaphylla.
One of the best of the herbaceous Potentilla hands down, period. End of story. This is a "Quit talking, just do me, baby" Potentilla. Deep double orange flowers combined with the soft caress of green-gray foliage are an exquisite pleasure verging on pain it is so intense. The grays in the foliage are considerable less than 50 shades tending towards more green. Full sun.
This natural hybrid of one of the classic South African bulb genera is endemic to Cape Province, and you'd be hard pressed to find it much further than that native range even in cultivation, luckily we have excellent connections like Michael Wickenden who generously shared it with us. Bladelike foliage, while nice, is unlikely to wow. The flowers however can grow in great spikes of up to 6 1/2 ft tall! Individual florets can come in red or pink and look rather similar to a more trumpeted Hesperantha, corollas flaring out to a star shaped opening. A super hybrid out of the UK from crossing the two related genera, Hypoxis and Rhodohypoxis. These genera occur in South Africa and are small bulbous members of the Iris family. While just a few inches tall, these are showy beyond the implied limits of their size and can cover themselves for weeks in large red flowers. Easy to grow and a fast increaser, this will become a favorite. Cold climates can be overwintered inside where cool.
Beautiful sky-blue trumpets with a white throat in September on this Gentiana ornata x farreri hybrid. Granted a Royal Horticultural Society First Class Certificate in 1936, we've righted a wrong by finally making this fine UK selection available in the US. Slow but steady in the Colonies!
A Primula allionii hybrid which we received from the plant duo of Mason & Grimm at Hedgerows Nursery. The allionii hybrids are a tough lot and excellent for troughs, rock gardens and container culture. Small cushions of foliage on well-grown plants can get totally obscured by white flowers with a tiny cream eye. This is a good gateway hybrid to the many allionii crosses out there.
One of the very good Asiatic gentian hybrids which we procured in Scotland a few years back. This has good, white megaphone-shaped flowers which are liberally, if subtly, spritzed with pale blue spots. Makes a dense small mat of green needle leaves which dies back in winter. Moist, acidic and sunny.
Exceptional white-flowered Asiatic Gentian from the Berrybank Hybrids bred by Ian McNaughton in Scotland. We never met Ian but were fortunate to meet his plantswoman wife Beryl which is a lasting fond memory. 'Oban' fulfills Ian's breeding goals of compact habit and upward-facing flowers in clusters. This hybrid of I. wattii and I. japonica originates from California plantsman Jimmy Giridlian and comes to us via Russell Graham Purveyor of Plants. Forms a slowly spreading clump of 2' arching evergreen leaves that lift aloft the pale flowers that perhaps provided inspiration for the name, white banners with golden throats and pale purple central petaloids give an air of royalty and purity that suggest a monthly income far above nada. A highly choice Iris that we are glad to have more than nada of, and are happy that you too will be able to remedy any nada quantities of 'Nada' currently listed in your surely well curated garden inventory.
So notoriously promiscuous as to make a rabbit blush, these evergreen bulbous Iris family members are all about the summer of love. Embracing any bee that taps on its window bringing pollen from any nearby floozy flower, this exhibits a Bacchanalian moral turpitude that is either damned or extolled. These are young seed-grown plants from one of our darkest Dierama so at worst, this will still be pretty good.
Exceptional selection of this cross between Garrya elliptica and G. fremontii from Glasnevin in Ireland. What is notable about this is the long late winter catkins have conspicuous wine-colored bands. We're talking Pinot Noir here not Pinot Grigio. As a bonus, the stems are dark colored as well. Winter interest, anyone?

Our own hybrid introduction which we have trialed for 10 years before releasing a few. A very long bloom period from mid summer into fall. Narrow foliage supports 3'+ stems of rich burnt orange with the individual flowers glistening as if lacquered. Attribution to everyone's favorite 1978 Captain Beefheart album Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller). A Far Reaches exclusive which we think is damned good.
Nerines are like having a fall blooming Christmas Amaryllis in the garden except these are hardy to zone 7. Where it is colder, these are a snap to grow in pot and as they flower from leafless bulbs in the autumn, you can enjoy the flowers indoors and after blooming, simply cut off the stem and store them in a cool garage until spring when you can bring them out and the leaves begin to grow.The original Nerine 'Pink Triumph' was given an Award of Garden Merit in 1957 by the RHS and is presumed to be a hybrid of Nerine bowdenii and N. undulata with larger flowers than N. bowdenii and later blooming in December. This original plant may be difficult to near impossible to find as virtually all the 'Pink Triumph' in cultivation are from a Dutch source and incorrectly named. This is not necessarily all bad from a garden worthiness standpoint as this may well be a selected form of N. bowdenii since it blooms earlier in the fall thus not as prone to frost damage plus the Dutch usually select for good increasers of which this certainly is one. The upshot is that while this is incorrectly named, it is going to be a better plant for the garden being hardier, more apt to avoid having its flowers frosted and having very good rich pink flowers. Nerines bring a totally unexpected blast of exotica to the fall garden and look particularly good in Mediterranean style plantings.
This is a fine selection quite comparable to "Back in Black" but a bit more compact in stature aspiring to attain 3' in height. This makes it much more workable for the front of the bed or as a container element. Dark stems holding dark blue-purple flowers in late summer. Mulch if very cold but has been fine here in the Puget Sound area.
We received this as the Pioneer Mountain form of Erythronium revolutum and indeed, there is revolutum in them as well as californicum. These are obviously natural hybrids which do occur and perusing "Erythroniums in Cultivation" by Ian Young, these fit his description nicely especially with the parallel, narrow filaments.
