Plantsman and bulb expert Jim Fox was staying with friends in England and admiring their fine Nerine 'Quentin' in their border which had a few seed which he passed to us. Mere decades later and - Voila! - we have Quentinlettes. Quentin is highly regarded in England and the offspring are good too. Has overwintered outside in a pot, freezing solid with no ill effects. These single bulbs are not flowering-sized offsets - probably 2 years to bloom - and just potted this August so not yet rooted out, if you're shipping this fall.
A Primula allionii hybrid which we received from the plant duo of Mason & Grimm at Hedgerows Nursery. The allionii hybrids are a tough lot and excellent for troughs, rock gardens and container culture. Small cushions of foliage on well-grown plants can get totally obscured by white flowers with a tiny cream eye. This is a good gateway hybrid to the many allionii crosses out there.
An imposing selection fitting perfectly in the garden style of Big, Bold and Beautiful. it is not often one extols the merits of Crocosmia leaves but these wide blades with pleated ridges stand en garde against other substantive companions such as Canna or dark-leafed Ligularia. To 5' tall with narrow tubular orange-red flowers. This is one we brought to the US from a visit with the late Michael Wickenden of Cally Gardens in Scotland.
These are seed-grown from the impressive yellow hybrid Meadow Rue, Tukker Princess. These will gain some height reaching 6'-8' in flower with a nice display of bee-lovin' scented yellow flowers. Does not flop in our sunny and windy garden which is a plus. Self-sows which is not a plus so cut off seed head before ripe.
A super hybrid out of the UK from crossing the two related genera, Hypoxis and Rhodohypoxis. These genera occur in South Africa and are small bulbous members of the Iris family. While just a few inches tall, these are showy beyond the implied limits of their size and can cover themselves for weeks in large red flowers. Easy to grow and a fast increaser, this will become a favorite. Cold climates can be overwintered inside where cool.
A plant this diminutive just can't be this sassy but Ione Hecker is obviously the English equivalent of Dolly Parton because this is a lot in a little package! Finely cut gray leaves in a dense mound with surprisingly large flowers that are a blue-hued pink with rich fuchsia striations leading to a magenta purple eye. A class act in a trough or rock garden and it is remarkably hardy. This was selected by Ione Hecker from a batch of seedlings raised by E. B. Anderson and is a hybrid between O. laciniata and O. enneaphylla.
These Sanguisorba arose as self-sown seedlings from our sales area where we have had various species and selections for sale. We are using the catch-all "hybrids" because the bees adore the pink to red conical flowers and they were visiting all of them! Customers were always asking if we had the plant blooming under the tables - now we do.
Nice red-orange flowers really puts on a show later in August which comes at a time when some of the other reddish varieties have finished flowering. Named for Phillipa Browne who is a Crocosmia hybridizer in the UK. We're certain she didn't name this after herself and that a fellow nurseryman chose to honor her work in this way.
This is a dandy cross between Primula minima which is really tricky to grow and P. hirsuta which is a lot easier. The result has the charm of minima without the temperament and the ease of cultivation which hirsuta offers. Great foliage and vibrant reddish flowers. Good drainage and morning sun.
This is one coming out of the garden of Matt Mattus and has garnered the name 'Matt's White'. This may be a name functioning more as a placeholder for origin than a proper clonal name. It is a good doer and basically obscures the foliage when in flower so be forewarned if you like leaves with your flowers.
This is a gleaming bit of sunshine carried into your shadowed shade garden and released. The cupped leaves to just 5" high bring more light to their bit of turf than their size would suggest. The small light lilac flowers are nice but incidental because with this Hosta it is all about the glow.
One of the best of the herbaceous Potentilla hands down, period. End of story. George Zimmer of Men's Wearhouse "I guarantee it". This is a "Quit talking, just do me, baby" Potentilla. Deep blood red flowers combined with the silver foliage are an exquisite pleasure verging on pain. Full sun.
From great plant friends in Scotland, this showy cross of two fine Candelabra Primrose species garnered accolades when they used this to great effect in a display show garden. Colors are widely variable and size can be a bit shorter than the parents but literally, all are good and work well together. Now if only politicians............
Tiny-leafed hybrid of Soldanella carpatica and S. pusilla . This very small scale little creeper with tiny evergreen leaves surprises in spring with over-achieving light lavender fringed bells. Similar to 'Spring Symphony' but flowering a bit earlier. One of the easiest Soldanella to grow. This is one we picked up in the UK a few years back.
Fabulous hybrid Hepatica that in time will form mats of great lobed foliage with loads of light medium blue flowers in early spring. A durable plant with few if any faults. Great with Ranunculus ficaria and Hellebores.
This lacks the variable purple streaking in the flowers commonly associated with typical x beesiana. Held well above the leaves, exotic flowers are a clear pale yellow the color of moonlight caressing the languid limbs of your beloved as you lament the bright moon dimming the Perseid meteor shower. Best in cooler climates but succeeds in Maryland.
Awesome Geum rivale hybrid from Yorkshire plantsman Geoffrey Smith which we brought back from Binny Plants in Scotland some years ago and can now offer a few from division. This has a refinement lacking in the newer in-your-face hybrids which we quite appreciate. Nodding coppery-pink flowers straighten out becoming soft pink. This is the correct clone as opposed to mislabeled plants from Holland.
We received this as the Pioneer Mountain form of Erythronium revolutum and indeed, there is revolutum in them as well as californicum. These are obviously natural hybrids which do occur and perusing "Erythroniums in Cultivation" by Ian Young, these fit his description nicely especially with the parallel, narrow filaments.
Vigorous plants and our hybrids with mainly delavayi as the parent showing more vigor and variation in shape and color than what we associate with known delavayi of wild origin. Whatever the parentage, (I sometimes wonder about my own) these are arresting shade plants for rich moist soil. Red flowers are amazing surprises under the leaves. Persistence of patterned markings are variable and expect fading to varying degrees as the leaves mature. These are all unique individuals which we would be happy to have in our garden. We have offered these earlier as presumptive hybrids and we presume no longer. We will jump on the Dysosma instead of Podophyllum wagon soon.
This hybrid Oregano works what it got to da max. This is made to order for heat waves, drought conditions, and hungry bees. Lean soil with great drainage? Check. Dry summers? Check. Ravening hoards of deer and rabbit? Check. Loads of amethyst-pink flowers from light green bracts in summer.
