A hybridizing dead end with no hope of winning the Lhasa Zingiberaceae Club Roscoea show and getting its time on the podium with adoring retirees from around the world ooh-ing and ahh-ing from their couches. Nonetheless these are sweet plants with their own appeal, just like your friendly mutt. Short with red stems and green leaves and flowers like that of "Red Gurkha" but with a varying degree of violet tinge.
One of the best of the herbaceous Potentilla hands down, period. End of story. This is a "Quit talking, just do me, baby" Potentilla. Deep double orange flowers combined with the soft caress of green-gray foliage are an exquisite pleasure verging on pain it is so intense. The grays in the foliage are considerable less than 50 shades tending towards more green. Full sun.
A Mexican species and rhizomatous type with leaves that while not as large as the namesake Heracleum do rival in it in incised shape, and far outdo it in leaf patterning with a edge spattered in a dark reddish black. Could prove hardy in mild Zone 8 climates!

Hot new Agapanthus from the UK with refined clusters of Icy pale blue with long pendulous individual flowers held at eye level. This shows the strong influence of the species inapertus with its drooping flowers which we do so love. Ice Cascade will make you shiver in delight.
The bees have done some fine work in the garden, shuttling between a Roy Lancaster collection of the purple/white Epimedium x omeiense and our collection of the rare yellow Epimedium flavum, found only in a small area of the Erlang Shan in Sichuan. These are unselected seedlings which all have garden merit and are deserving of a good garden trial but our ADPS (Attention Deficit Plant Syndrome) is getting in the way of doing that so we are jobbing it out to you. This hybrid of I. wattii and I. japonica originates from California plantsman Jimmy Giridlian and comes to us via Russell Graham Purveyor of Plants. Forms a slowly spreading clump of 2' arching evergreen leaves that lift aloft the pale flowers that perhaps provided inspiration for the name, white banners with golden throats and pale purple central petaloids give an air of royalty and purity that suggest a monthly income far above nada. A highly choice Iris that we are glad to have more than nada of, and are happy that you too will be able to remedy any nada quantities of 'Nada' currently listed in your surely well curated garden inventory.
Coveted hybrid Mayapple nearly impossible to find. 'Red Panda' is a seed strain from the O'Byrne's with some variability but this form from Nita Jo Rountree is the best that we have seen. Large copper leaves in spring which become infused with green as the summer wears on and very good red flowers in spring. Moist shade in rich soil = Pandamonium.
One of the most intensely colored Juliana type Primroses out there. This puts on a no-holds barred display of shrieking magenta flowers that is a celebration of pigment with no apologies. The rich color sets it apart from all others. Tolerates full sun if given enough water but looks better given some relief from afternoon sun. Very tough and a good clumper. Our plant came from Rice Creek Garden in Minneapolis years ago so that gives some clue as to hardiness. It also came under the name of 'Lois Lutz' which we have sold it as for a number of years including this year on our online store here. Thanks to the American Primrose Society show people down in Portland for pointing out the error of our ways.
White flowers with purple streaking on the long labellum - the lower, largest two petals of the flower. Roscoea auriculata and R. cautleyoides are the presumed parents of x beesiana and this group makes for excellent garden plants. Taller stems to 16" or a bit more, this can have a ghostly presence - almost eerie, depending on light, mood and current news cycle.
A pretty spiff hybrid from the Los Angeles County Arboretum. This hardy Lily of the Nile has deep and dark violet flowers which are held on stems up to 3' and are quite the show. Had a girlfriend years ago who was deep and dark and would frequently put on quite a show but that grew tiresome. This plant is different and you won't weary of it or require therapy.
A hybrid Bergenia from the breeding work of Rosemarie Eskuche in Germany. 'David' has smallish leaves which stand quite upright taking on good color in the winter. Being smaller and upright lends itself to containers or the rock garden. Intense pink flowers on stems to 16" in spring are impossible to ignore unless of course you decorate with plastic flamingos.
Robin White's hybrid which was a gift to us from John Massey at Ashwood Nursery and typical of anything from Robin, this is freaking awesome. Stout of stem, bold of leaf and arresting of flower, all is colored a rich purple in June and July later mellowing somewhat but still freaking awesome. Unavailable in the US. Except here.
From our breeding work with Podophyllum, comes a very vigorous hybrid between a good form of pleianthum and a robust delavayi hybrid. These have large, rather olive-green leaves touched in mottled light bronze especially when young and has red flowers that are well-displayed. This is not flamboyant but has a redoubtable solemnity of purpose and inherent courtliness which has earned our respect.
So notoriously promiscuous as to make a rabbit blush, these evergreen bulbous Iris family members are all about the summer of love. Embracing any bee that taps on its window bringing pollen from any nearby floozy flower, this exhibits a Bacchanalian moral turpitude that is either damned or extolled. These are young seed-grown plants from one of our darkest Dierama so at worst, this will still be pretty good.
Seedlings from a floriferous red-flowered selection from Russell Graham. Russell had one of the most beloved specialty nurseries in the Northwest and to say he knows a good plant is stating the obvious. The parent plant is a short, dense clumper with small red flowers that rule by their majority. This has pride of place in our garden, widely separated from our other Dierama, so hope is for similarity on these children.
Robust seed strain from our breeding work with each possessing its own unique varying degrees of dark foliage and flowers from red to red-pink to red-purple. Normally, we select one or two to keep - which we did - and throw the rest out - which we didn't - as these are all worthy of pride of place in the garden.
We are pleased to be the first to introduce this excellent Sibirica Iris to North America. We were visiting John Grimshaw, plantsman extraordinaire and Director of the Yorkshire Arboretum, and walking about his home garden when he asked if we would like a bit of an Iris he had named with lovely scrambled egg flowers of yellow and cream. We said yes, of course because while we might be comparatively brutish colonists, we ain't without a certain native wit. Very floriferous on a shorter plant with flowers well-displayed. When Cotswold Garden Plants first introduced this in the UK in 2011, John mused on his blog about how nice it would be to receive a voluntary royalty which he could use to help fund the educational needs of a Maasai child he is sponsoring. School doesn't get less expensive as you get older so we are going to give $5 from each plant sold back to John.
Superbly vigorous 2nd generation hybrid of S. carpatica x S. pusilla from the vaunted Edrom Nursery in Scotland and we may be the first to introduce this to North America. If you are into small ornament of ingenious construction, the maximization of minimalism, a totally improbable flower to foliage ratio - we have you so covered! Soldanella are alpen sophisticates that should be grown more in northern cool climates. This hybrid retains the vigor of the comparatively coarse S. pusilla and brings in superior flowers and foliage of S. carpatica. Evergreen tiny round leaves and 4" salmon pink flower stems with lavender-blue fringed bells in early spring is an impeccable combination. Loose gritty-humusy soil in dappled light or morning sun is great.
Attractive cousin to blueberries growing in the trees of Thailand's northern mountains. Sometimes seen offered as a hybrid clone 'Red Elf', this is typical hosseana which is a small evergreen shrub with dark red flowers that can take light frost. The fruit is edible and would be nice sprinkled on Thai Beef Salad, Phla Nuea.
A hybrid Gesneriad between Briggsia aurantiaca (syn. Oreocharis bilburtii) and Opithandra primuloides (Syn. Oreocharis primuloides) which we succumbed to at Aberconwy Nursery in Wales. White, bilaterally symmetric flowers touched in faint pink with throats patterned in pink lines. Easy in cool greenhouse but can tolerate some frost, so mild gardens are maybe okay.
