This was found in an area of ecological devastation where the only survivors were toxic or as in this case, inaccessible by virtue of growing on a vertical cliff face. The Yi minority control this area and sold all timber and mineral rights so there was not a tree or shrub left in the overgrazed stubble and bad mining practices were rampant.
This robust Chinese groundcover was shared with us by one of the great unsung planthunters of our era, Steve Hootman. We've seen other species of this genus in Sichuan and have always been ensnared by its curious flowers. Saxifrage family, this is strongly stoloniferous in moist shade.
This has grown into one of our favorite small deciduous shrubs which we grow near our bog garden. Collected in China on the Sino-British Expedition to Cangshan in 1981 which was one of the first western botanic expeditions to China in modern times. Copious pink-white flowers on a 4'-6' tall shrub. Zone 6 at least.
Our collection of this as yet unidentified Gentian from an isolated peak with difficult access. This was growing on steep open banks overhung with Schefflera fengii and Rhododendron sinofalconeri where it made rounded small shrublets with semi-woody stems covered in clusters of shades of blue flowers.
Not one you will easily find, this tough rarity hails from China's Xinjiang Province and neighboring Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan. High moist meadows are home sweet home for this blue-lavender drumstick Primula dusted in farina. Sue brought this west from VT over 20 years ago. Said it was tough!
A deciduous shrubby Cotoneaster collected in Asia by Arlen Hill who owns one of our favorite nurseries, Keeping It Green. This was a scrambler on a rocky cliff but will be a small shrub in the garden. Such a varied genus from groundcover to small trees with the shared attributes of pollinator-irresistible white flowers and red fruit for fall and early winter interest. Someday in our dotage when discretionary time is abundant and we tire of whittling to fill the hours, we will fire up Flora of China online and puzzle through the key to a proper identity for this species.
Young plants of this extremely rare species which we speculate will have only light frost tolerance so perhaps good for zones 9-10. Evergreen bold leaves bringing to mind an unholy union between a laurel and a rhododendron. Insignificant flowers at a relatively young age. A number of novel alkaloids have been isolated from this species if this makes up in any way for the lack of showy flowers. A Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy Offering
One of those captivating Chinese species. This has a neat stoloniferous habit sending out runners and making new bulbs so you soon have a grove of Lilies. Flowers pink with dark spots with recurved petals in the classic "Turk's Cap" style. We love it.
Very rare collectible and delectable Iris from China introduced by Darrell Probst. This Iris is seldom available and is one of the stars in our shade garden. This particular clone has slightly larger flowers that are white without any blue shading. Makes an evergreen fine grassy mound. Best in light shade or part sun. Slow growing and totally rules when mature.
Yunnan Honeysuckle. We saw this plant on the edge of the woods while hiking up to the Gangheba valley. It was an attractive small tree with 2-3 narrow trunks to about about 12' high. It has tubular-pouchy cream flowers flushed lightly in pink with a rich orange throat and attractive, widely winged seeds. Yunnan Weigela might be a better common name.
Our collection from Asia of what we presume to be the super-hardy Zingiber mioga but there are a lot of species to choose from! Corn foliage and cute ground-level soft yellow orchid flowers at ground level which are a worthy reward for a deep bend at the waist. These flower weeks earlier than our CDHM 14723 collection and have a wider labellum with the whole flower evenly colored. A worthy reward for a deep bend at the waist.
Annointed as the "Queen of the Umbels", this is what Queen Anne's Lace would look like after a top design team makeover. The refined supreme lacery of foliage and polished presentation of 8" white platters of flowers belies a certain innocent muscularity. The epitome of texture.
Our collection from the the summit of Guizhou Province's highest mountain in the southern Wumengshan. This was an area of severe deforestation and grazing but we secured 5 seeds of this very nice pink flowered species hiding at the edge of a boulder in the cropped turf and after propagation, can now offer this rare and possibly new to cultivation beauty. We have been thrilled with the performance of this in our garden where it grows at the foot of a large Baptisia where it wends it way through the stems to 3' tall and fronts the Baptisia with a skirt of pink flowers for going on three months. It is actually giving the Baptisia a bit of a complex because the Baptisia flowers for about a week and takes up a lot of space while meantime the Geranium is just a little energizer bunny.
A collection from Guizhou of this species in the Sinarisaema section and which is likely part of the variable Arisaema consanguineum complex. This has up to 8 radially arranged leaflets with attractive green flowers with pale white stripes held beneath. The long, attenuated drip-tip of the spathe-limb is softly chocolate colored and adds considerably to the allure. This has been a durable plant in the garden.
We've gotten this excellent small species over the years with various names attached such as 'Sky Blue' and 'Cobalt' and there is not a bit of difference between them. As a species, this is perfectly capable of standing on its own merits without the needless marketing ploy of a seductive name although there are differences in shades of blue but we have not had them. Small heads of dark violet blue flowers on 6" stems in June and July are held above dense clumps of fine grassy foliage. Easy and hardy clumper to zone 4 from China.
Our introduction from 2012 of this new to cultivation species. This was found on a scramble up a shaded and damp ravine which would have been a small stream during rainstorms. Fortunately it was sunny. A tight groundcover with normally green leaves but this sport has frosty white flecks in the leaves most prominent in the spring. Small green flowers.in branched heads up to 6" above the leaves. We were hoping for yellow but this will make the green flower contingent happy. You would be surprised just how many of them are out there! This overwintered nicely in our garden winter of 2014 enduring two separate events of 3 nights of 15F each time.
Cool little gesneriad which recently was transferred from the now defunct genus Briggsia Glabrella. We only call this molecular meddling when we are updating our various database entries and pot tags. Shaded moist areas in Guangxi and SE Yunnan and can take light frosts. White/pale pink flowers.
Our collection from a plant with particularly good red-purple new growth where it was growing in rich soil moist soil in open woodland with a few plants of the rare Primula ovalifolia as neighbors. This is groundcover with strawberry-like stolons terminating in a plantlet which will root where it touches. Lovely thing with pale flowers above the bold foliage in early spring. The species handles the east coast as well growing in the Dronenburg-Weil garden in Maryland.
A Dan Hinkley collection from Mt Emei in China's Sichuan Province and touted as being hardy to Z7 but only by those in serious zonal denial. That said, a customer told us that he mulches his deeply and it has survived our worst winters so there is a clue - mulch!. An attractive plant with late season pink flowers and well worth trying in a sheltered spot.
Our collection of this interesting Solomon's Seal from the Cangshan in Yunnan way back in 1997 when we were with Kunming Botanic Garden. This has bamboo-like new growth which is quite striking and tiers of verticillate lanceolate leaves on stems to 6' gives great texture. The leaf axils are crowded with small pale flowers followed by orange-red fruit in the Fall. Tolerant of our cool full sun and part sun is ideal.
