These are plants from a special deep purple form of this Candelabra Primrose from friends in Scotland who are enviable growers with an equally enviable discerning eye. We have not flowered these yet so we will be surprised and delighted together. This requires a moist to wet soil and can take full sun in cool sun areas.
Exceedingly showy blue flowered selection of the Drumstick Primula. This gets big rounded flower heads as the name might imply. These get to be imposing foliage plants as well if given rich moist soil in light shade and are a presence even out of flower.
Seedlings of this Drumstick Primrose from a red or "Rubin" flowered selection which will undoubtedly be all over the map in flower color as long as that map runs from point blue to point red since we cleverly have this growing near a blue denticulata. The older we get, the more we know and the less able to act on it apparently! Pedigree aside, these bastard children will easily become accepted members of the garden's upper crust through sheer perseverance and irrefutable beauty.. If yours turns out red, feel free to call it 'Rubin Selection'.

A choice Primula endemic to the southern Italian Alps where it grows in rich humus-filled crevices in limestone rocks. These are divisions from the plant Sue brought from Vermont decades ago. These make bold clumps of distinctive sharply pointed foliage with short-stemmed clusters of pink-red flowers. This likes a moisture retentive well drained soil and has been easy and durable for us in our standard mix.
Excellent garden species for a cool, partly shaded spot, in the wild, this calls the Alps and Pyrenees home. A testament to its good character is that this is a parent of the showy "Auriculas" found in gardens and show benches. Ovate leaves with some marginal "toothing" on the upper half. Pink-mauve flowers in umbels with up to 15 flowers per stem although we never get that many as we are always dividing our plants up!
Candelabra Primrose. Staggering floral display of tiered rings of flowers arrayed up sturdy stems from 18" to 30" when living large in rich, moist soil and all of this above broadly sumptuous and lightly rumpled foliage. A swash of these always leaves one a bit short of breath with its beauty. Yours will be either vibrant fuchsia or tomato terracotta - a surprise awaits down the line.
A fun Primrose that, when settled in and enjoying a rich crumbly soil, can really make a nice patch. This spreads by underground rhizomes and is a good colonizer. With some plants, when you say 'colonizer' it rightly sounds an alarm much like a submarine klaxon on an emergency dive. Not so this. Rich tomato-pink flowers above season-interest-extending, felty foliage.
A white flowered version of the normally pink Japanese which we never have enough of as it sells immediately. One of our customers tells us how it well does under the trees in dry shade and we grow it in the dry end of our shade garden. This has large fuzzy leaves and spreads rapidly by rhizomes if moist or slowly if dry or just right if in-between.
Good blue-flowered marginata selection named for Primula enthusiast Jimmy Long. The species is native to European alps and is found in rocky cliffs often under overhangs. These have been easy in pots in the open nursery and are great container or rock garden plants.

A well toothed and lilac-flowered cultivar of this primula that has coped well with less-than-perfect conditions and is considered easily open-grown or placed in a rock/alpine garden. Keep from too much wet to fully enjoy the farinose dusting of the foliage. These were said to originate from the trenches of the Napoleonic wars, echoing a time-honored symbology of regrowth after war-time.
Not one you will easily find, this tough rarity hails from China's Xinjiang Province and neighboring Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan. High moist meadows are home sweet home for this blue-lavender drumstick Primula dusted in farina. Sue brought this west from VT over 20 years ago. Said it was tough!
A candelabra type which we found growing in a high boggy meadow in Sichuan in October 2012 where it mingled with other Primula species, Gentiana sino-ornata in bloom and hummocks of dwarf Rhododendron. This had small seed capsules with short pedicels closely set in whorls on the scape reminiscent of Primula wilsonii. We have now flowered here at the nursery and see that it is a good form of Primula poissonii with large magenta flowers in tiers on the tall stems. We had previously offered this as a candelabra Primula species. Fairly sun tolerant if given ample moisture or tolerant of what passes for sun here in the maritime Northwest.
A interesting oddity from the annals of the Far Reaches nursery catacombs. In yonder days we brought back on our jolly jaunt to the UK plants of Primula poissonii from our esteemed colleagues at Rumbling Bridge nursery, so enthralled were we with our species plant that we had the audacity to write (true) on the tag, inviting a curse of wanton succubus primulas which promptly assaulted our chaste new acquisitions. We have suspicions that the the lascivious demons to blame were somewhere in the spectrum of P. wilsonii but who's to say. Their sin-stricken offspring are more loosely held and a bit darker than poissonii. Romance novel fans, this one's for you.
A proven species for the garden, this Primula from China is in the Cortusoides section of the genus as evidenced by the broad, soft hairy leaves reminiscent of Primula kisoana but without the groundcover proclivities. A good display of pink to rose-pink flowers on 12"-16" stems in late spring with sumptuous leaves in attendance if given light shade and a moist, organic-rich soil. Our seed came from a most discerning Scottish grower.
What a pink! The distillation of hues, shades and tints into a saturated concentration of the pink pigment is an unqualifed success in this saucy Primrose. The flowers erupt from the winter resting buds before the leaves expand and demand attention in the garden. Best in a rich moisture retentive soil.
Higher elevation Chinese species favoring a moist and rich with compost spot in part sun. This has long been a favorite species of ours with its pendant rose-purple flowers held on long pedicels heavily coated in white mealy farina and carried aloft on tall stems up to 2 to 3 feet. Sue grew this in northern VT.
Safe to say this is rare. From the higher elevations in Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet comes this collector's primrose. This has proven very easy in our shade garden where the rounded sort of palmate leaves form a very dense canopy over the short creeping rhizomes. Purple rose flowers are just what we wanted to see.
