The all but unseen in the U.S. variegated form of one of the supreme small ornamental grasses. Retains the string-of-pearls white flowers while transforming the blades into an unmatchable pastel rainbow that on closer inspection betrays its elegant components of green blades with a white central stripe tipped by a purplish-pink. Its rare that a grass can reach the sublime but I think its fair to say this one does.
An adorable little dwarf Stachys we salvaged out of maniac plant collector Marian Raitz's garden. Lilac-plum 10" flower spikes in midsummer are perfect arising from the soft cottony foliage. Low small-scale groundcover for full to half sun.
A behemoth of an introduction from our friends at Celestial Dreams Gardens. Stoutly stocky with an implacable confidence that only comes from knowing you are the apex Roscoea in our large school of species and cultivars. Thick stems hold big white flowers whose beauty fills the mind, preventing any ear-worm memory of the 'Jaws' music to intrude.
Epiphytic blueberry relative with some of the coolest flowers you will ever see, dark red checkered tubes that are a favorite of hummingbirds. The flowers are a rich blood red and especially voluminous and open in this Steve Hootman selection. Does well in hanging baskets as it produces many arching stems of small evergreen leaves that prefer winter warmth in most temperate areas.
Perhaps the most splendid yet in our little collection of these enigmatic little South American Peruvian lily relatives. This one comes to us from Ecuador via plant friend Chen Hao. The flaming red and orange flowers were something to behold in their inaugural appearance and are worth bending over backward like the resupinate leaves to lay eyes on. Likely vigorously vining where it can overwinter well, hard to say where that might be, anything less than Zone 9 is potentially a gamble but please report to us any positive results!
