Ruscus

Ruscus is a curious genus of only 6 species in the asparagus family. These slow-growing, leafless evergreen shrubs are lauded for their toughness and attractive red fruit. Their common name “Butcher’s Broom” came from the long-ago practice of using their stiff branches to sweep debris from butcher’s blocks. This genus usually is dioecious, meaning you need both a male plant and a female plant to set fruit.
