Roscoea

Without the slightest bit of hyperbole, Roscoea is one of our favorite genera. We love them for their durability in the garden and their exotic, almost orchid-like flowers. The genus was named for William Roscoe, who founded the Liverpool Botanic Garden way back in the 1800's and is in the same family as culinary ginger, Zingiberaceae.

We have lost our minds over this genus, collecting and hybridizing with abandon. At this point, we have amassed a respectable collection of species and cultivars, which are now displayed in a 75’ raised planter bed attached to the east side of the Collector’s Garden at Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy. What continues to excite us is that there are many more left to acquire and to learn from – the hunt continues!
