A candelabra type which we found growing in a high boggy meadow in Sichuan in October 2012 where it mingled with other Primula species, Gentiana sino-ornata in bloom and hummocks of dwarf Rhododendron. This had small seed capsules with short pedicels closely set in whorls on the scape reminiscent of Primula wilsonii. We have now flowered here at the nursery and see that it is a good form of Primula poissonii with large magenta flowers in tiers on the tall stems. We had previously offered this as a candelabra Primula species. Fairly sun tolerant if given ample moisture or tolerant of what passes for sun here in the maritime Northwest.

Star light star bright, First primrose I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, Have this primrose I wish tonight. Nothing subliminal here. The five petals are shaped like a heart and are love-pink on the reverse while the face of the flower is white feathering to pink on the edges. Good, big flowers in quantity on each stem puts on a show.

A fun Primrose that, when settled in and enjoying a rich crumbly soil, can really make a nice patch. This spreads by underground rhizomes and is a good colonizer. With some plants, when you say 'colonizer' it rightly sounds an alarm much like a submarine klaxon on an emergency dive. Not so this. Rich tomato-pink flowers above season-interest-extending, felty foliage.

Robust Japanese selection of this revered Primrose species with sumptuous pale-faced flowers breezed with the lightest smoke of lavender-pink. The backsides of the flowers are more intensely colored borrowing perhaps on the evolutionary success of flamboyant backsides across a wide range of species. Whenever we watch Nature on PBS and there are male Mandrills in full display, Kelly feels cheated, inadequate and frustrated being a monochromatic species until Sue says "Honey, it was your inner Mandrill that I fell in love with". Hardy zone 4 to 8b.

This is a dandy cross between Primula minima which is really tricky to grow and P. hirsuta which is a lot easier. The result has the charm of minima without the temperament and the ease of cultivation which hirsuta offers. Great foliage and vibrant reddish flowers. Good drainage and morning sun.

Classic name for what must be an English selection with amber tawny yellow flowers - in the US with our bright yellow squeeze bottle mustard, it would have to be an old forgotten bottle of mustard indeed. Easy doer we got from that consummate English plantsman David Mason and he didn't steer us wrong. Wide leaves backing stems with umbels of pub mustard flowers with a white eye.

Bold white flowers with broadly rounded petals on this Japanese selection of the species. In Japan in the wild, this primrose is found on grassy edges and mixed with other plants which provide a dappled light. It is also more adapted than most Primula to a bit of summer dry if need be. There is a plant society in Japan devoted solely to this one species and all of its cultivars - truly a descent into a maelstrom to contemplate the infinite variety and permutations that they have with this one Primula species. Love it when something gets taken to the limit.

This Lady has a lot to offer and the image of a Madam in a high-end Victorian brothel keeps intruding when attempting to describe those offerings. Courting disaster on the precipice of good taste, exuding confidence without apology, this selection invites anthropomorphism like few others. The rich pink of passion on the reverse, a chaste white on the front with pink-tinged petal margins awakening.

Pink flowers with a hint of violet that elevates this on the societal color palette preventing it from slipping down to the campy plastic flamingo. The broad petals have a small, white distant star for an eye and are nearly imperceptibly dusted with what could be airborne suspended particles of confectioners sugar lightly settling to rest. In our house, it would be a delicate white tracery as if from floating dog hair.

Seedlings of this Drumstick Primrose from a red or "Rubin" flowered selection which will undoubtedly be all over the map in flower color as long as that map runs from point blue to point red since we cleverly have this growing near a blue denticulata. The older we get, the more we know and the less able to act on it apparently! Pedigree aside, these bastard children will easily become accepted members of the garden's upper crust through sheer perseverance and irrefutable beauty.. If yours turns out red, feel free to call it 'Rubin Selection'.

Western Shooting Star. A pleasing western wildflower California to Alaska that one can't help but enjoy with its showy pinkish flowers with its strongly backswept petals. Likes it moist in spring and goes summer dormant when it gets drier. The taxonomic move of Dodecatheon to Primula nearly made us give up on plants and take up studying something stable and predictable like Constitutional checks and balances. A collection by our friend Daniel Winkler of this Tibetan alpine meadow and streamside species found growing up to nearly 15000' . Nodding pale yellow flowers on a tall stem stem held well above the foliage, this was once described as var. luna due to its moonlight yellow flowers. This has proved a durable species here at the nursery carrying on year after year while more effete species quietly slink into oblivion.

An old Irish cultivar sporting an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Small creamy flowers getting a pink tinge with age are perfectly paired with the tidy small green leaves. A dense clumper that puts on a good show, make that a jolly good show, old boy, in early spring.

A choice Primula endemic to the southern Italian Alps where it grows in rich humus-filled crevices in limestone rocks. These are divisions from the plant Sue brought from Vermont decades ago. These make bold clumps of distinctive sharply pointed foliage with short-stemmed clusters of pink-red flowers. This likes a moisture retentive well drained soil and has been easy and durable for us in our standard mix.

Selected by El Supremo Plantsman John Flintoff from Loie Benedict's garden, this revered Japanese species stands above the multitude of sieboldii selections by having huge flowers and stout stems which don't flop. Takes more dry than most Primula but don't push it.
