This little bulbous jewel from South America takes a back seat to no bulb. A bantamweight in size but this flowers at a weight class much higher. A perfect bun of green foliage with lots of flowers whose pale pink chases dark feathers down to the white center. Gritty and drainage. Trough or rock garden.

Fabulous hybrid ornamental Oregano (O. rotundifolium x O. scabrum) which is both heat and drought tolerant and with its small compact size is a perfect choice for the sunny rock garden or top edge of rockery wall. This really does need sharp drainage to perform its best. In the Midwest, it is used as an annual in window boxes. Light pink flowers all summer long and perennial in zone 7 and above.

Gorgeous tuberous small Oxalis hybrid whose parents call the alpine scree slopes of the Andes home. Harold McBride of Ireland did a cross between Oxalis laciniata and a deep pink form of Oxalis enneaphylla with the resultant seedlings called 'Waverley Hybrids' and we presume that over time, this one gained the most favor and is now simply 'Waverley Hybrid'. Intense purple flowers with petals striped in darker purple lines as well as white striations. Small bulb-like rhizomes are several inches deep in the wild but in cultivation tend to work themselves close to the surface and seem to be happy in either regimen. Ideal for troughs, crevice or rock gardens and we reckon easily zone 6-8. A very tidy and compact grower and difficult to source outside of Europe which is where we had to go to get ours.

If the nursery catches on fire or there is an EF5 tornado bearing down or skies darken from a locust plague of biblical proportions, this is in the first armload we grab. A gesneriad from our collection in Asia where this grew on shaded, mossy rock faces enjoying Acer griseum and Emmenopterys henryi as neighbors. Gloriously large, totally tubular lavender-pink flowers awaken urges long forgotten. Hardy here at FRF in the maritime PNW. A portion of the proceeds goes to support the mission of Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy.

The cream of the the New Zealand woody Asters and a star in the rock garden. This comes from the alpine areas of the mountains near Marlborough up to 1900 meters. Flowers are a bit of yellow teminal nothings but the whipcord silvery branchlets are exquisite perfection. Full sun and drier lean soil will suit this. Took 3 nights of 0F at Hedgerows Nursery in 2009.

This gesneriad (African Violet family) is from our collection just miles from the China-Vietnam border. Small narrow-necked yellow flowers over evergreen rosettes of leaves. We have seen this species in numerous sites including southern China growing on mossy rocks, fallen logs or epiphytically. Has proven hardy in our zone 8b winters with good drainage. A rare member of the Scrophulariaceae from the Chilean Andes. This has done great in our shade garden where the shade, moist but well drained soil and tasty helpings of dairy manure really help. Evergreen leaves except if real cold and red tubular flowers on up to 18" stems in early summer. This has made an excellent small-scale groundcover and thanks to Claire Cockroft for thinning her plants and sharing with us.

Very nice Chinese member of the African Violet family that is surprisingly hardy and well suited to milder gardens here in the Northwest. We have friends in North Vancouver BC who have grown this beautifully for years in their moist woodland garden. This would typically grow on mossy rocks in the wild. Yellow tubular flowers. Not that we're big fans of the genre but having watched the movie 'Transformers' on a flight back from the UK, we think Tremacron would be a great name for one of those big robot things.

Our collection from Guangxi on a mountain area little explored by Westerners. This Mondo Grass had leaves to 2' long and fairly lax. Flower stems just 3" tall with surprisingly nice mauve flowers that give way to typical shiny Ophiopogon fruit in the fall. Excellent textural evergreen for shade with a bonus of good flowers. Surely one of the best Omphalodes with electric blue flowers nearly twice the size of the species. This was shared with us by our plant guru John Flintoff who has given us so many treasures over the years. A vigorous and not fussy coarse foliaged groundcover perfect under Rhododendrons and one that is easy to keep in bounds. Those blue Forget-me-not flowers somehow just seems to feel like an integral part of spring for us.

Unit price perVery cool South African bulb grown from seed we received from English plantsman Harry Hay many years ago. Harry was a discriminating collector of plants and generous in sharing. This has broad strap leaves and tall stems bearing pendulous flowers of softly muted green. Truly regal. This has been amply hardy for us and appreciates a bit of shade from the hottest part of the day and will do well on an eastern aspect which where we have ours planted on our sunny border.

Our collection from Longshou in Sichuan where this was a small 3'-4' rounded shrub in full exposure eking out a living on a small rock face. This is a little different than what is in cultivation as the leaves appear to have a higher degree of fine dentition on the margins and the white flowers are bunched in tubular clusters. This will be a good tough and deer resistant plant.
