Originally introduced by Cistus Nursery from a seed collection at 8000' in La Siberica, Mexico, this very desirable plant has become hard to find of late but our two plants finally flowered with impressive spikes that was one male and one predominately female so we had seed! These have been undamaged in brief nighttime drops to 10F and have formed new crowns after flowering so the show will continue. It is mandatory to have a series of parties when these bloom, btw.

Second generation plants from our collection from along our way up the mountain to Tianchi Lake in Yunnan. We found this Lily relative (which has been called N. forrestii) growing in a wooded copse with Sorbus reducta. Likes a good moist soil and can have 7-10 flowers per stem in our experience when it gets some age. Pretty much awesome. These are young bulbs which should flower next year (although we can't guarantee that) and a must-have for cool northern woodland gardens. If you garden in Kansas, Texas or most of the Southeast for example, it is probably better to just enjoy the photo. These survived the brutal 2013-14 winter in Wisconsin at a customer's garden as newly planted bulbs in the fall which is impressive considering the ground froze 5' deep. Hardy to zone 5 if not zone 4.

We originally received this as seed from a serious collector and grower in Scotland. While we much prefer to grow plants from documented wild provenance, this is sometimes nearly impossible to do and this is such a case. Nomocharis, like so many other genera, is enjoying some taxonomic dynamics with new species being introduced from the wild as well as species being added from the genus Lilium. The genus steadfastly remains one of the most coveted in the Liliaceae in our opinion and the thrill of seeing these in flower each year is felt as keenly as if it was the first time. We've had good reports from customers with Nomocharis in zone 5.

Beautiful pink flowers on this elegant plant formerly placed in Nomocharis and where they continue to reside in our hearts and minds. Grown from a seed collection in China by the very knowledgeable Bjornar Olsen, this is a very special plant. Some variation from evenly pink to a pale margin on the tepals. Can't select, sorry!

Myrtle Beech. This evergreen Tasmanian tree is infrequently seen in cultivation in North America. Our friend Steve Hootman's seed collection of this species will help put right any wrong in that arena. Small leaves adorn the branches - great for bonsai. Gets to be a large tree especially in warm temperate rain forest settings which in Tasmania can mean a 150' tree while up at tree-line, this same species is reduced to 3' tall.

A rare species from northern Myanmar and adjacent Yunnan, this is even a rarer opportunity to purchase bulbs from seed collected in the wild by Bjornar Olsen. Nomocharis in cultivation live in the Summer of Love and welcome without reservation any pollen from any other Nomocharis nearby resulting in hybridity. These are direct wildlings and flowers vary a bit which is not uncommon in a population.

Plantsman and bulb expert Jim Fox was staying with friends in England and admiring their fine Nerine 'Quentin' in their border which had a few seed which he passed to us. Mere decades later and - Voila! - we have Quentinlettes. Quentin is highly regarded in England and the offspring are good too. Has overwintered outside in a pot, freezing solid with no ill effects. These single bulbs are not flowering-sized offsets - probably 2 years to bloom - and just potted this August so not yet rooted out, if you're shipping this fall.

A remarkable arborescent species endemic to the Sierra de la Laguna of Baja California where this grew on a shaded ridge in mixed oak-pine forest at 5800'. This can get over 20' tall with a 10' inflorescence with yellowish to white flowers but that height might be for your child's child's child's child to enjoy - it will take a while! A luscious, tender Nerine sarniensis hybrid worth every effort to overwinter. Related to Amaryllis, this bulb is summer dormant with the leaves appearing in winter and flowering in fall. The flowers are the rich pink of promise speaking directly to the limbic brain, conjuring ancient cave responses as though confronted by sex, ripe fruit or blood. Civilization is but a thin veneer. Basic culture is plant so bulb is partially exposed and let get somewhat dry between waterings and more so when dormant.

The first fern offering from our North Vietnam collections, this poor fella has been called as many names as even the most bullied of unfortunates from Lepisorus to Neolepisorus to the sci-fi devilry of Neocheiropteris. Through the torrid taxonomic seas it has clung to its floating board of delightful egg-shaped-ness, keeping its ovate epithet intact and acing that old proto-parenting assignment. The bright green egg shaped fronds with a rough papery texture are wholly unique and make for one of the ultimate pot displays or epiphytic wonders (for milder climes). We recently planted one out in our tufa wall and are eager to see how it performs for us here. Very rarely offered anywhere due to its slowness and I have never seen this pure green form offered anywhere stateside. One for the true botanical connoisseurs. 

Fantastic Tanbark Oak variant from a small mutant population in Yuba County, California that was discovered in 1962. This features narrow leaves with prominent teeth on the margins. This population tends to be shrubby but in cultivation, it grows normally, capable of putting on 2'-3' or more per year. Evergreen, this will get to 30' and more if you have longevity genes and are around to see it. A broadly pyramidal shape, grows quickest in a rich moist soil but can take some dry when established and best in full sun but is surprisingly shade tolerant.

This collection is from nearly 6000' in San Miguel Co., New Mexico and hardy down to Zone 5. This yucca relative makes dense clumps of thin grassy leaves to 3' tall and holds the dense plumes of creamy flowers nestled in the uppermost leaves. The brown seed heads evoke fat cigars. Young plants for dry situations with good drainage.

An Asian Sour Gum or Tupelo related to our own eastern Nyssa sylvatica. This deciduous tree does flower, not that you would notice, but it does produce small bluish fruits in Fall. Fast-growing with largish leaves often carrying bronzy-purple tones when young. A moist acidic soil and sheltered from hot or freezing winds. Loves a woodland edge for example. From the borderlands of SE Yunnan and Vietnam and could easily be a species other than sinensis. A Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy Offering

Collected by Floden-Mitchell-Wynn-Jones at Lao Cai, Vietnam at 2050 meters. This rare species is best suited for the naturalistic or wild garden as this makes a large shrub with the branchlets tipped in fingers of small and admittedly insignificant pale white flowers which contrast with the reddish stems and textured rich green leaves. From a purely foliage and stem standpoint, this may be the best in the genus and has good fall color to boot but is still a shrub best suited for botanic gardens or dedicated Asian flora plantaholics. Hardy to zone 8b.

These are seed-grown bulbs from our original plants which we grew from seed we collected in the Cangshan in 1997. We were midway up the flank of the mountain and the weather cleared just enough to allow a glimpse far down to the plain below where the famed 3 Pagodas of Dali stood as faint pencil strokes fronting the wide expanse of Lake Erhai. A sight we will never forget. This a truly fabulous Lily relative with wide-open flowers dotted in maroon which open pink but age to white. When I go to the great compost pile in the hereafter, it is understood that Nomocharis pardanthina are to be strewn liberally on my casket. Rare and very choice. These are naturally small bulbs but they may well flower this spring. This will appreciate a cool site in light shade to morning sun. We know the related Nomocharis aperta can take a tough zone 5 winter and hopefully these can as well but we tend to be conservative so are sticking to zone 6 until we know different.

This Vietnam collection of the Sour Gum tree leaves us shaking our heads in some amazement as we are awed by its vigorous growth with new foliage colored red-purple. Then we shake our heads in sadness as we are too cold to grow this - regrowing from the base doesn't count! Give it plenty of room - screen your neighbor.

A vigorous shrub outstanding for the wild edge or "natural" garden. A mass of thin kitty-wampus stems but with a general arching cascade effect. Delightful cigarillo shaped pink flowers. Good screening plant for creating a wall of a garden room. Deciduous and easy.

A collection by Dr. Cody Hinchliff from the highest reaches of the Sierra de Laguna in Baja, Mexico.  This Bear Grass Tree makes impressive trunked specimens in time with equally impressive displays of many creamy white flowers.  We can say that these plants have memories of colder times as one of these young plants we planted out in November of 2023 survived handily the beastly arctic blast of several days with temps down to 11F.  A rare offering and this will be ideal in sunny dry spots with good drainage with occasional deep watering.

Tufty Southwest U.S. native that is every bit as drought tolerant as it looks. Thinner blades than other species lending it a grass-like texture that belies the architectural spires of white flowers that can double the size of the foliage for an impressive 6-7' display.
