This is a true jewel and one we always look forward to seeing in the fall when the tabletop sized patch of low dense dark green leaves are alight with outrageous large white daisy flowers. Talk about contrast with so many of the hot colors of Autumn! In taxonomic flux, we previously offered this as Nipponanthemum nipponicum. The white flowers take on some pink-lavender tones as they age and all looks quite good over the dark green foliage.

A very robust selection in one of our favorite genera, this is one we brought in from Japan some while back and at last have some to offer. Wider and longer leaves than most of our other forms we grow, this by necessity makes larger evergreen rosettes. In early spring the central floral resting bud starts to awaken and March sees the elongation of the flowering stem to 10" and the appearance of a full head of creamy flowers aging to a clear white. This Snow White truly would make an insecure and wicked queen jealous!

This is an indicator plant useful for delineating highly refined plant geeks. Perfection of scale and form with very narrow slightly curled leaves and delicate white flowers followed by improbably rich blue shiny fruit. Involuntary moaning is perfectly acceptable. Very slow clumper.

The luscious double flowered form of this aristocratic woodlander from Japan. Extra petals on the lightly blue-pink tinged white flowers takes this to the next level. This is certainly one of the 3000-4000 plants that we would grab first if the greenhouses were ablaze. Our own plants from our divisions - not imported.

These Japanese versions of the European nobilis are ones we have grown from seed and have been hoarding for a few years but since there is no room left in the Hepatica house, we must send a few of our kids out into the world. Each plant is different from white to pale pink and we get to pick. These are larger, established plants - not fresh from Japan. Also note that these are not as hardy as the European Hepatica but good for sure in zones 8-9a.

});">
The Japanese name 'Seiju' translates to "master" in English. This showy dwarf Chinese Elm has mastered textural structure with especially corky bark as it ages. The small leaves don't obscure this corkiness and have a brief Autumnal dalliance with yellow. A go-to specimen for Bonsai and provides a larger element in the rock garden.

A rare Toad Lily restricted to a small area of moist cliffs in Kyushu, Japan where its long 2'-3' arching stems can hang in excellent presentation of its upward-facing yellow flowers. This would look pretty fantastic in a container or planted in a Fern stumpery if flowers were allowed. Cool summers and moist - not for hot interior gardens so great here.

Our own flowering divisions from a plant bequeathed us from the former garden of plant-obsessed Marian Raitz. This Japanese selection is a fully pink double and double means the flowers last longer than the typical single fertile flowers. Ideal for cool greenhouse pot culture or mild gardens.

Tongue Ferns are widespread in China and Japan where they can be epiphytic as well as lithophytic on rocks. Fantastic variants are being selected by the cult followers of Pyrrosia in Japan and "Tachiba Koryu' is one with evergreen blade-like leaves sporting rounded lobes along the margins. Does fantastic at Peckerwood Gardens near Houston. We have seen the species making impressive colonies on rock faces or in mossy rubble during various China forays and it is always like coming across an old friend in the forest. This is best grown in loose, well drained soil and would be happy in a rotting stump or lightly shaded scree bed.

This Strawberry Saxifrage has rich colored leaves quite maroon underneath and intricately marked in silver on top. This sends out runners like a strawberry which makes new plants at the tips & makes a great groundcover for moist shade. Dandy and delicate white/pink flowers on 18" stems. This has proved itself in our shade garden.

Think of this as a woodland Salvia which blooms in the Fall. This Japanese jewel brings an unexpected and welcome shot of color to the shade garden in Fall with airy panicles to 3 or 4 feet holding zillions of small tubular blue-purple flowers. Something nice to look if you are overloaded on the reds-oranges-yellows classic colors. Our staff plant nerd Cindy reports that she loves this in her garden so there you have it for local testimonials.

Fabulous Toad Lily with long arching almost hanging stems which have large broadly tubular rich yellow flowers sprinkled with red spotting in the interior. Yea verily. Perfect in a semi-shaded moist situation where it can spill, arch, hang and enchant. Ideally you would plant this on a humusy shoulder on the NE aspect of your sloping moss-covered cliff where it approaches the lower end of the pool which was formed in the creek by the waterfall at the pool's head and where it can catch the occasional errant waft of mist swirled by the intermittent gentle breeze underneath the high canopy of mature Acer palmatum. Lacking these very basic amenities, a simple moisture retentive woodsy soil in the shade will do quite nicely.

Luscious variegated selection out of Japan of this small evergreen shrub. The leaves are heavily frothed and patterned in creamy whites which can take on some pink depending on the season and exposure. No two leaves are alike on this new wave plant canvas. Small white flowers under the branches. Small but nice plants.

Very desirable Japanese woodland Salvia which in this selection has exotic pink fragrant flowers in October! Likes a moist humusy soil in gentle morning sun to light shade. This is quite a departure for the autumn shade garden and it will leave you wanting mo' and mo' Momobana. This is going to work best in areas with mellow fall weather as it such a late bloomer.

The perfection of presence so inherent to Japan oozes from the stomata of this Nipponese woodlander. Pinkish new growth with lavender tones to the rounded foliage is meant to pair with the simple light lavender flowers. Allied to our eastern Jeffersonia diphylla like a Lexus SUV to a F150 pickup, a comparison not meant to disparage or annoy champions of the lovely J. diphylla. These are from our own divisions.

A very good evergreen fern native to Taiwan, China and Japan which we imported from a specialist in the UK. Tidy and attractive species reaching 30" wide with fronds to 20" tall, this requires shade to part shade. And brace yourself - it is tolerant of dry shade! Happier of course with some water, Spore-grown by us.

Grown from seed collected in the Yoro Mts in Japan, this compensates for being shorter than its cousins by being hardier to Zone 6. Personally, I subscribe to the fishing theory that it is not the size of the worm you use but how you wiggle it. Will thrive in rich moist soil.

Choice selection from Japan that is necessary. This small species gets to just 12" tall and has superb soft yellow variegated foliage in spring and early summer which matures to a light green. If it kept the preponderance of yellow then this would be a skinny and underfed selection but the summer chlorophyll kicks in just in time to give this vigor.

Rare selection of this Japanese woodlander of delicate stature notable for its smoky cast to the foliage particularly in the early part of the season. Named for Mt Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture (best skiing in Japan) where we presume this was found. This is a little shorty with small pale bells and will clump up nicely. Thanks to Darrell Probst for sharing this bit of rare awesomeness.

Oyster Leaf. The leaves are edible and taste - and feel - exactly like raw oysters. If raw oysters are your thing, this is an OMG veg alternative. The now closed El Bulli in Catalonia, regarded as one of the greatest restaurants ever, ran with Oyster Leaf innovative ways. Loved to have tried the leaves striped in golden caviar and splashed with Grey Goose. Beautiful glaucous blue-green leaves on sprawling stems tipped in small sky blue flowers. This likes ample nutrition. Perennial and dormant in winter. This is a plant of just above high tide line on cold northern hemisphere beaches from Maine to Greenland and Japan to Alaska so if you have a cool to cold garden, here you go.
