This hybrid of I. wattii and I. japonica originates from California plantsman Jimmy Giridlian and comes to us via Russell Graham Purveyor of Plants. Forms a slowly spreading clump of 2' arching evergreen leaves that lift aloft the pale flowers that perhaps provided inspiration for the name, white banners with golden throats and pale purple central petaloids give an air of royalty and purity that suggest a monthly income far above nada. A highly choice Iris that we are glad to have more than nada of, and are happy that you too will be able to remedy any nada quantities of 'Nada' currently listed in your surely well curated garden inventory.
An exciting tender perennial Impatiens from Vietnam we brought in via the UK. Deep green leaves with magenta undersides on a stout 3'-4' upright plant are quite enough but add the late orange-yellow flowers with red lips and be ready for involuntary expletives and religious exhortations. This Lamiaceae species comes from woodlands in Japan such as Fukushima Prefecture. All summer you get to enjoy the subtly interesting leaf shape and texture, pondering what possessed you to grant this space in your overplanted garden. Once the riot of summer color is gone, the lavender spikes of this uncommon species brings clarity.
Primo little collector's Iris with charming white flowers - smaller than the more frequently encountered 'Alba' - over dense mounds of fine-bladed foliage. It's graceful appearance hides a tough core and an implacable perseverance that has kept it in our collection for over two decades. A Japanese deciduous species preferring light shade or part sun. This is a good one.
This is a fine form of the Algerian Iris that we got from our bud, Sean Hogan. This has larger flowers than typical being 3-4 inches across and of a good blue-lavender with a narrow strip of yellow on the falls which is feathered on each side by white. A winter bloomer which is critical here in the Northwest.
This is a choice little dwarf species from China of which we never have enough. Perfect lavender-blue flowers just a few inches high over densly clumping short foliage. This is one tough baby Iris as Sue brought this out from her garden in northern Vermont. Deciduous.
Named for UK plantsman Martyn Rix, this Iris gets bamboo-like stems to 2'-3' topped by fans of long green leaves from which the long flower stems emerge bearing a swarm of dark blue-violet flowers which are deeper colored than typical for the species. This would boogie in a rich moist in a partially shaded site in a mild garden. We usually get a brief cold snap each winter which keeps us from being San Francisco and that cold snap takes off the canes carrying the flower buds so we get to enjoy blooms in our cool greenhouses or visit friends in town who are just that much warmer. Very cool and worth growing. Evergreen in most non-violent winters.
This clone of this fabulous Iris introduced by Darrell Probst is one of our favorite plants of all time. Very fine grassy foliage making a large lax dense mound that is festooned with small white jewels of flowers. It won't happen overnight, but give this a few years and you will have some serious bragging rights. Not that we ever concern ourselves with things like that...
Holly-leafed Sweetspire. Awesome evergreen shrub not unlike an effete Garrya in habit and flower but that is perhaps an unfair portrayal. This has grown for decades in the Arboretum in Seattle as a fine free-standing shrub. It really shines as a wall plant with a natural lax habit and the 10"-12" green-white scented flower tapers are fantastic in summer.
A lesser-known cousin to the better-known Iris unguicularis. This is a Turkish species and while it blooms a bit later than it's famed cousin, is still early enough to be immensely gratifying plus it has hands down far more attractive evergreen foliage than I. unguicularis. We had a flower or two this past December but expect it to really kick in when March roll around. The flowers are held down in the foliage and often this foliage is cut pack prior to flowering so the blooms can be enjoyed unencumbered. We've never gotten around to do that and our enjoyment has not been diminished one whit Easy with drainage and will take some summer dry. We've found the foliage looks better in part shade and actually grow this in our shade garden.
Rich purple flowers of a color more suited to the dreams of the Pope than the Devil, unless of course the Devil is dreaming of someday wearing those rich purple Pope-robes, in which case it is appropriately named. Just speculation. Great color anyway.
Iris maven Carla Lankow shared this nice form with us which is smaller in stature than most of its counterparts and has very prominent violet staining to the base of the leaves which is a most attractive feature and more pronounced than other clones we grow. Small blue flowers with a yellow thumbprint on the falls that are quite charming and have an orchid-like quality to them. This is evergreen and prefers a partly shaded to shaded position in moist soil that doesn't waterlog. Hardy through zone 7 and has been grown with coddling and judicious use of microclimates in zone 6 and even zone 5 although in the latter, it is a grudging survival.
An awesome - and I don't use this word lightly - hardy Impatiens from Eastern Africa. John Grimshaw in the UK speaks highly of this species. To 6' tall in morning sun or light shade with awesome (there i go again) 3" wide flat-faced white flowers with a red throat. Gorgeous. Perennial big tuberous roots. Not a seeding bully.
Among our thousands of plant accessions, tall bearded iris are represented by just a single plant - Iris 'Kent Pride'. This outlier in our collections strategy is sited in one of the choicest spots in the dry garden because it is a stunner. Rich chestnut-red standards with the same overlaid on yellow around a white blaze on the falls - so good! An enduring gift to us from one of the PNW's best plant minds, Jim Fox, who acquired this at Beth Chatto's nursery in England and which we finally have enough to spare a few. It will be some years before we offer it again so dither not. Fresh divisions potted in gallons.
A U.S. native Iris that can compete with the Asian big dogs of the Iris pack. This boggy little beaut hails from the Southeast and grows alongside pitcher plants in partially sunny seeps that must be quite spectacular to behold. 2 foot foliage goes dormant in the winter but the memory of the elegantly slender flowers will carry on.
An interesting version of this valuable evergreen Iris which has light lemon flowers instead of the typical uninspiring dull lavender mauve. The flowers are really just a teaser for the main show which is the big seed pods spitting open in late summer and fall showing brilliant red -orange seeds. Excellent evergreen foliage.
An uncommon tuberous species from South Africa where it is rare in the wild and getting rarer from human pressure. This is Dahlia hardy here in the Northwest so can be left in the ground if the drainage is good and you are kind enough to muclh it in the winter. Big leaves, reddish stems and pink flowers with a long spur.
Every spring I say 'O-mi-gawd! How does that little thing do that?" Flowers completely over the top and a celebration of extravagant copious excess which would lead one to think this is the All-American plant but in reality is from the Kunming-Gothenburg Expedition NW Yunnan China 1993.
Fabulous Award of Garden Merit shrub that has lovely pinnate Pea-like foliage and scads of luscious pink Pea flowers for several weeks from early to mid-summer. Quite pest free and wanting only good sun and drainage. A little light pruning for shape once a year and you are set to enjoy.
These are seedlings from some of our selected varieties of this European iris which is stinkin' good like a fine Camembert rather than stinking like overripe gym socks. We haven't flowered or fruited this but we have varieties with purple flowers and yellow highlights as well as yellow with purple highlights, the very showy fruit can be shades of orange or white. Whatever you get will have nice broad evergreen leaves and a long season of interest on a tough and reliable plant!
