Fantastic little plant from South Africa which used to be Aster natalensis but is now in the genus Felicia. We got this from a Scottish alpine nursery in Scotland and know of a rock gardener in northern Norway who raves about it. Tight clumps with blue flowers with a yellow button in June-July. Very hardy. First introduced to the US by Far Reaches Farm.

A fine hardy hybrid from Deb and Ron Monnier whose nursery, Monnier's Country Gardens in Woodburn, OR closed in 2009. This knockout will keep the memory alive for years to come. Maroon tube and sepals embrace a corolla that is black velvet eggplant in color with an optical texture that is almost 3D. To 3' and hardy in the PNW. Mulch in winter.

Sweet little evergreen groundcover from southern Taiwan where it grows at low to mid elevation in littoral thickets. Then there are the virtual thickets.... Small rounded leaves and yes, there are very small figs but it would take a lot to make figgy pudding. Zone 8 hardy and grows at the Zone 7 Raulston Arboretum in a sheltered spot where it is deciduous in cold winters. Tolerant of shade.

This hardy bush Fuchsia is quite a pleasing addition to the garden where it performs admirably in a sunny spot with lots of narrow hanging white flowers which are touched in faintest green on the tepal tips. Recent winters have put a whupping on reliably hardy plants so if it is going to turn nasty, mulch the base and trunk well. Easy and gratifying.

We first encountered this species in the fall of 1997 when we were on the mid to lower slopes of the Cangshan Mountains looking down to the barely discernible 3 Pagodas of Dali fronting the broad expanse of Lake Erhai. This groundcover species formed broad carpets of evergreen foliage covering the large rocks on the boulder-strewn slope so as to give the impression of a tumultuous green sea frozen in place. The day sounds much better than it was, for back in 97 there was but a rough single track road to the higher elevations and on that day our jeeps were blocked by a massively overloaded lorry whose driveline had failed under the weight of massive marble blocks quarried from the higher reaches. The truck was gradually sinking into the mud with just a few inches of clearance and a young skinny boy had been fetched from downslope to slither underneath and effect repairs, which was going to take many hours at best. This meant we were stranded at low elevation with a bunch of botanically fascinating, marginally hardy plants which was not our goal. We made the best of it and one of our new acquaintances was this Ficus.

We were pleased as punch when our friend Jim Fox gifted us with cuttings he took from Roy Lancaster's garden where it is growing as a foundation plant against his home. It was not a stretch to think that this plant was from the same population we had seen as Roy had traveled this same road years earlier as part of the Sino-British Expedition to Cangshan. Sadly we can't grow this outside here in our gardens but if you are lucky enough to have only very light frosts or none at all, then this would be a fine groundcover. This does have small reddish figs but stick to the ones you get at the store.

These are cutting-grown from a plant Steve Hootman found growing in a garden in Philadelphia where it was defying conventional wisdom as to its hardiness. Being a savvy sort of fellow, he snagged a few cuttings thinking this might prove to be very useful. We think so too although we have not yet trialed it out in our garden. So many plants, so little space. This does seem promising and if your are looking for a small-leafed evergreen creeper that will cling to rocks or a wall, then this might be just the ticket.

A good form we have increased painfully slowly by division over the last dozen or so years. This makes no financial sense whatsoever but we get oodles of smiles from this when it flowers every spring in the nursery so compensation enough. From eastern Washington and summer dry is fine.

OMG! What a Vine!! I have no idea how to text, but people younger than me says this means Oh My God and omg, this perennial, dying-to-the-ground-each year vine with white flowers in late summer eats Golden Hops for lunch. Expect 20' of blazing color.

Our collection of this especially small-leafed form of Ficus which we are referring to pumila as the geography fits. We observed this looking especially nice climbing vertically up a tree trunk to 6' in light shade. We've not tried it outside for hardiness but should have reasonable cold tolerance.

Distinctive Asian conifer forming impressively large trees up to 100' and we've been very fortunate to see large specimens in Guangxi Province. The dense branchlets are flattened much like a Thuja and extremely handsome. Ours is thriving in full sun/wind exposure. Recently moved to Chamaecyparis and then back. Young plants. 

A hardy upright Fuchsia for our Northwest gardens which has good sized red flowers with a prominent rich purple corolla. We always mulch our fuchsias for the winter and expect them to be cut to the ground in a normal hard winter but they regrow and bloom like nothing happened the following summer.

This is a hybrid named by Sean Hogan which was found at the Ruth Bancroft gardens and is a suspected cross between the creeping Ficus pumila and the big edible fig, Ficus carica. It does seem to be perfectly intermediate. A rambler/scrambler for a sunny spot good for winding through shrubs. Zone 8, tiny figs.

This hails from the mild Crinodendron tucumanum/Podocarpus parlatorei cloud forests of northern Argentina. It thrives as an understory plant and competes well in the tangle of rampant growth clothing shaded banks along the road. Pendulous bright red clusters of long flowers give way to edible-if-the-fruit-stand-is-closed fruits.

A Chilean collection of a very large form of this showy species. You can correctly infer that since this is larger, it is showier! Four foot tall or more flower stems arise from the bold basal rosettes of ruffled rounded leaves to display in grand fashion the wands of white-throated pink flowers. If size is important to you and if we are all being honest, it is, then this is the Francoa to which all others must be measured and found lacking. Mild gardens here.

A pretty cool introduction from Cistus Nursery from a batch of seedlings and this stood out with its silvery filigreed leaves. A surprisingly hardy Fig with intriguing foliage and small figs which we have heard rumors of being edible. Insert disclaimer here. We've seen the species growing quite happily in the Cistus display gardens near Portland which attests to its love of heat (they are hot in so many ways) which we don't get here in maritime Port Townsend but which it does have in its native Iran and Afghanistan. Plant this in a hot spot that gets on the dry side - it should love it.

This is not a Fuchsia to which one can remain indifferent. A tender species from South America, this is a winter-bloomer with long, thin flowers appearing at leaf fall and then adorning the 3'-5' bare stems. The distinctly softly lavender-pink flowers lack an inner corolla presenting a very pleasing minimalist design aesthetic and the large orange fruit which follow are an unexpectedly discordant delight. We're not sure how this species came by its name but it will totally rule your greenhouse in winter. Here in the PNW, flowering is punctuated by ongoing street fights among factions of overwintering Anna's hummingbirds vying for control. Viva la revolucion!

A bushy hardy Fuchsia with arching branches and largish leaves which is good because they are one of the good things about this selection being richly colored in red if grown in ample sun. The flowers are no slouch either and they have to bring it to keep up with the leaves and that they do with a red exterior and a double purple interior corolla. Winter mulch.

This weird variant of the Alpine Strawberry was discovered by John Tradescant in 1627 near Plymouth in Devon and is often called the Plymouth Strawberry. The white petals of the normal flower have been replaced by green leafy bracts and the fruit follows suit cloaking itself in spiky green appendages. Not a treat for the table but a historical and fun treat for the garden. This was thought to have gone extinct but was found again in a few gardens a few years ago. It was reintroduced recently and repatriated to the woodlands around Plymouth. A great example of how gardeners and gardens can conserve rare plants.

A cold-tolerant species from Brazil that was discovered in 1934. This not-so-common species gives the effect of a smaller Fuchsia magellanica with the small deep pink and purple flowers but on a smaller scale. In our cooler climate, this will get to 3' or so while in warmer, longer season zones, perhaps to 5'. Once well established, this will spread gently via rhizomes but easy to keep in bounds and perfect for sharing, furthering your propagation reputation.
