Chilean Fire Tree. One of the most dramatic plants for our area. This requires our cool and moderate climate where it can become a 20' + narrow deciduous tree that is usually multi-trunked. In late May and June, this is a tower of blazing red-orange tubular flowers and you will get little else done other than answering questions from the neighbors about just what is that tree and eventually there will be strangers knocking on your door inquiring and if you plant a grove then there is the inevitable issue of tour buses with which to contend. Best protected from freezing winds, ours is fully exposed to such but we wrapped the trunk the first few years when we dropped into the teens but now we just give it tough love and do nothing. These are very nice plants and will grow rapidly. Being in the Proteaceae, they don't enjoy phosphorous so be careful what you fertilize them with - it is the P in the NPK ratio to which they are allergic. Rather than think too hard on it, we just ladle some dairy manure around our plants in early spring.

We received this as the Pioneer Mountain form of Erythronium revolutum and indeed, there is revolutum in them as well as californicum. These are obviously natural hybrids which do occur and perusing "Erythroniums in Cultivation" by Ian Young, these fit his description nicely especially with the parallel, narrow filaments.

A robust hybrid of E. tuolumense showing broad lightly mottled leaves and 12" flower stems bearing multiple sulphur yellow flowers with a light brown ring in the throat. A vigorous increaser by offsets - not seed. In just a few years you will have a truly impressive clump.

Robust California native that has a very limited distribution in the wild. This seems like the cabbage of Erythroniums as it puts up very large succulent green leaves with pendulous flowers of a rich yellow intensity. These increase quite nicely by offsets leading to impressive clumps. Shade.

This really would benefit from the heraldry of trumpets when it blooms since royalty does enjoy the pomp of lavish circumstance. But the flowers are such a nice fuchsia purplish pink with a red throat that the trumpets and all the trappings are implied. And with the same good mottled leaves.

Collected by the late Don Jacobs from an especially robust population at the eastern extension of its range in in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma. This eastern extension our native Western Stream Orchid will soon form a colony of flowering stems with small orange-yellow-brown flowers. Moist to wet rich soil - it's easy!

Why don't we all have a Eucryphia in our gardens? Few trees compare to this narrow evergreen - just 8' wide when 20'+ tall and when in flower it's Swoon City. Impressive 2" white flowers are borne in abandon in early summer. This likes a cool root run but we don't get hot here.

These are divisions with a minimum of two growth buds of this very rarely offered, hardy terrestrial orchid from the western Himalaya and Pamirs, and which is a central Asian counterpart to our own native Epipactis gigantea. This has freakishly nice rose-pink flowers with as many as 15 per stem. Easy in the garden and a good multiplier with underground rhizomes forming a small colony of 18" stems.

Marvelous selection by Harold Epstein and named for his wife, this has some of the most opulently colored new growth which marries perfectly to the large purplish flowers. A deciduous species from Japan and an excellent garden plant that has no faults as far as we can tell.

Or Orange Queen in translation from the German. A tough and showy evergreen Epimedium whose tangerine flowers are among our favorites. This makes nice dense clumps which are fairly weed suppressive. Always a good thing.

Amazing find by Darrell Probst in China who found this one plant growing under shrubs where it had a 4' flowering stem which he estimated had up to 1500 flowers! This is unique in the genus in having indeterminate flowering - it just keeps going for months! Spidery yellow flowers keeps bringing it on sprawling stems.

This is a seedling from one of the best clones of Darrell Probst's Spiny Leaf forms. The mama plant has luscious large bronzed new foliage with nice teeth on the margins and large creamy yellow flowers on low arching stems. The seedlings vary in flower color from light yellow to purplish flowers but all have seriously good foliage. All credit is due to the bees - we are just a conduit.

Nice native bulb surprisingly seldom available. Mottled leaves and multiple pale yellow to creamy yellow flowers in multiples hang above the foliage. Very good naturalizer from seed and one of the most requested plants in our shade garden aside from the fact that it is the first plant they see entering the garden.

Rock Fleabane. A mighty mite in the Asteraceae family, this rock crevice dweller was not discovered until 1978 in the Chiricahua Mts in Arizona and later was found 200 miles east in the Black Range of New Mexico. It has been very easy and rock hardy for us and although drought tolerant, adapts to frequent irrigation if given excellent drainage. Small white flowers dot the less than 1" tall ground-hugging mat of small leaves. Perfect for a trough, filling in crevices in stone walks or chinking the seams in a rock wall.

Our own hybrid introduction, this is a tasteful presentation of refined restraint. Small leaves well-speckled and clouded in quiet maroon when young are gently echoed in the sepals of the flowers which back the soft yellow spurs and cup. A tight grower making mannerly small clumps, this gets 8"-10" tall.

A fine selection of this deciduous Japanese species which was introduced by We-Du Nursery. Sizable flowers of rich purple are the hallmark of this plant and it more than holds it own against more recent hybrids. All Epimediums can't be painted with the same drought tolerant brush and this one appreciates more water than the real drought tolerant species.
