Here in Port Townsend Coastal Californians are like the bogey man haunting the dreams of NIMBY types and work-a-day home searchers alike. However in our rain-shadow deertopia, plants resistant to roaming teeth and the occasional drought are like affordable multi-unit housing. Thus we come to be selling this Cali native, and a prostrate large-flowered form to boot. The thick evergreen (in mild winters) foliage forms a tough mat producing odd buds that secrete a sticky gum that transform into a carpet of large yellow daisies in Summer, providing an adaptable full-sun groundcover.
This is the Award of Garden Merit form of the species which has a superior presentation in its fronds which are blessed with a long terminal pinnae. And really, who doesn't want a long terminal pinnae? The typical species is a familiar sight growing on the trunks of our native Bigleaf Maples here in western Washington but this form is rare.
Epling's Oak. Hybrid of Quercus douglasii and Q. garryana, known from only a very few locations in California. This
forms a deciduous, multi-stemmed large shrub to small tree, 20'-30' tall with
time. Beautiful blue-green leaves color in fall. Deciduous. Grown from acorns collected by Ian Barclay of The Desert Northwest.
Oregon White Oak. This variety of Q. garryana hugs
the foothills of the western Sierra Nevada and southern Oregon. In its native
poor, rocky soils this becomes a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree to 20
ft. Deciduous and drought tolerant. Another excellent Oak we're able to offer
thanks to Ian Barclay of The Desert Northwest.
Our native False Hellebore which we see in the Cascades. Fabulous foliage plant with big rounded pleated leaves. These will flower up to 6' with lots of small whitish starry flowers. Best in light shade or no afternoon sun. Loves a rich moist soil and is deer proof.
