Great form of this epiphytic evergreen species from northern Vietnam with rich purple foliage when young which gradually fades in intensity as the summer turns to fall. Small red or green flowers in profusion followed by red fruit. This has been undamaged to overnight 10F for us which gave lie to our vaunted store of horticultural certainties so we expect hardiness to zone 7 maybe lower with mulch. If the nursery was burning, this would be among the 11 Polygonatum we would run in to get.
A collection of this rare and usually epiphytic evergreen Solomon Seal from Vietnam by Aaron Floden. This species has in the past been treated as a synonym of Polygonatum punctatum but Floden has determined it to be distinct and reinstated mengtzense as a valid species name. We love this kind of stuff! A small species less than a foot tall with small rounded white bells under the arching stem as the new shoot elongates and matures. These are flowering size and hardy to zone 8 for sure and no doubt can handle dips into zone 7. We have seen this in several areas in northern Vietnam and is always a treat to find. Our plant of P. mengtzense var. tonkinense is very similar and has handled short dips to 10F with no damage to its evergreen leaves and expect the same for this one.
A collection from northern Vietnam of this evergreen epiphytic species which is hardier than supposed as the similar subspecies tonkinensis has been fine in our garden. Chubby white bells cluster like piglets in the leaf axils and are followed by reddish fruit. Very, very rare and adds a bit of cocky plantsmanship to the garden. This was collected nearly 1200' higher than the FMWJ 13066 collection we offer.
A collection of this stalwart Solomon Seal by Jeaninne E. M. Hoog and Michael H. Hoog at 400m in eastern Belgium in the Ardennes, Luxembourg Province. This is the true species that just chugs along with paired ranks of dangling green-tipped white flowers followed by blue-black marbles of fruit.
A simply stunning sport found in a patch of Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum' by plantsman and all-around good guy Roy Herold. Wide margins of cream and white on the green leaves bring some serious chutzpah to the shade garden and carry the show on long after the white flowers in late spring are but a memory.
Consistent and attractive yellow/cream streaked leaves on this Solomon's Seal adds a splash of color and collectible panache to the shade garden although this will take a bit of sun as well to no detriment. The usual white hanging bells on slightly curved 18"-24" stems. Tough, easy, good increaser, hardy and very cool - looks like all of the key boxes just got checked!
Double Flowered Solomon's Seal. Hard to come by and desirable double form of this excellent garden plant. The extra petals looks like a little green rose when you lift one of the dangling white bells and peer inside. It is one of those little surprises that makes the garden so fun.
Really good selection by Tony Avent from a collection on Korea's Jeju Island. This has closely set somewhat rounded leaves on stems that are slightly twisted giving the effect of a spiral staircase. The degree that this is apparent is directly correlated to how misspent and experimental your youth was - some folks never see it while for Tony and us, it's like totally apparent. Very hardy and a good increaser.
From wild-collected seed in the Russian Far East which was distributed 20+ years ago by Dr. Berkutenko. This is a lovely form of a widespread species with fairly compact habit and attractive leaves and has long been a favorite of ours. Very good bloomer with lots of white flowers held beneath the leaves and followed by a good display of blue-black round fruit. Hardy nearly anywhere as you might guess from its origins.
A selection by Tony Avent from his collection in Korea and notable for the reddish 18" stems which adds a dash of panache especially when hung with white flowers tipped in green. These are followed by clusters of round black fruit and so the show continues. Very hardy and easy to please.
Tall form of Polygonatum prattii from our collection in Asia. This has pink tinged stems especially when young and nice small rounded leaves with pettily delicate yet tubby pink urn-shaped flowers. We like all the prattii quite a lot and the sweet vanilla scented flowers contribute to the allure.
Adorable dwarf Chinese Solomon's Seal to just 4 or 5 inches tall. This has lovely light purple flowers which often causes Polygonatophiles to swoon leaving them prone in the garden where they awaken to smell the delightful vanilla fragrance emanating from these small jewel-like flowers which induces further swooning. This is simply a clever pollination mechanism involving repetitive nose transferal of pollen but be prepared and don't wear your best clothes. These are divisions originally from a Diana Reeck 1996 collection in China.
Scented Solomon Seal. Our collection from 10000' of this vigorous form of the species identified for us by Dr. Aaron Floden. We have other collections of this species which get just 3" tall but this collection gets near 3x that. The expected soft-pink bells are scented which is an endearing, if subtle, attribute.
Impish little species to a foot or so which looked unremarkable in the wild but blossomed - literally and figuratively - in the easy livin' at the nursery. Clusters of small white bells heavily marked in magenta dangle from long pedicels at the base of each leaf which is likewise fetchingly daubed in a small spot of bright maroon. Rare in cultivation, this form from NW India of this Solomon's Seal is mainly an epiphytic species growing in mossy trees and on mossy, humus covered rocks. The speckled pale pink flowers hang as small bells as the new growth elongates and as the season progresses, the flowers turn into attractive red fruits. In frost-free areas, the fruit-bearing stems overwinter and overlap the flowering of the next year's growth which is very charming. This is an evergreen species in mild areas and is some years for us but of late has been deciduous due to cold winters with no ill effects. It has done very well in our raised shade beds and this is another plant we mulch in the fall as a winter precaution. Good drainage.
One of our favorites, this came to us years ago from Washfield Nursery in England as Polygonatum geminiflorum but according to Polygonatum expert Aaron Floden, this does not match recent collections of Polygonatum geminiflorum by Ron McBeath and our plant and is actually P. singalilense. This species hails from the Singalila Ridge area which runs from Nepal west and north to the Darjeeling area and up into Sikkim. This slowly but steadily makes a nice clump with the leaves arranged in whorls which are wider than typical for the more familiar whorled species. The subtle bit of elegance that sends us is the small maroon shading at the leaf axil. It sounds silly but style is so often in the accessories.
A collection by Dr. Peter Zale of this recently described evergreen species. A gorgeous plant with attractive richly red new shoots and handsome foliage on arching stems. Small yellowish flowers adorn the leaf axils and reddish fruit follows. We haven't trialed this outside because our winters make us chicken out nearly every time. Let's go frost-free for now and we'll find out more later. Epiphytic, so a crumbly potting mix.
Our collection of this verticillate (leaves in a spoke or whorled arrangement on stem) species from a chilly mountain summit at almost 11000'. Even at this elevation, there was still active grazing by domestic animals and tasty morsels like this were to be found only in the embrace of woody and unappealing shrubs like Berberis. Wreathed in gloomy and mysterious hill fog, the red fruit on this Polygonatum shone like baubles most desirous. A smaller species, upright 16"-24" tall and fairly sun tolerant if that is your only choice rather than the preferred part to light shade. Fresh divisions of healthy rhizomes.
A seed collection from China from the vaunted plantsman Bjornar Olsen who has introduced an incredible number of rare Chinese plants to cultivation via his seed collections. This rare smaller Solomon Seal is one of those plants which we are pleased to offer. The long greenish-white bells are nicely displayed and not hidden by foliage. A good increaser as the keen-eyed among you instantly noted by the stems crowding the pot edge in the photo of one of our stock pots.
A superb smaller evergreen Solomon Seal from China which we have grown for many years and have come to regard as an indispensable part of the collection - one of the first plants we would grab when the greenhouse catches on fire, perish the thought! Milder gardens, glossy leaves, clustered white flowers and bright red fruit. Often an epiphyte.
