Our seed collection of Martindale's Desert Parsley from our nearby Olympic Mountains. This West Coast native umbellifer is found from sea level to the mountains where it inhabits dry meadows and dry. often rocky, slopes. Yellow flowers from this population where it grew with 3 species of Allium and Delphinium menziesii. Goes summer dormant and great for the rock garden.
A Steve Hootman collection from the Sino Himalaya of this quite unique creeping Honeysuckle. This is a Kinnikinnik (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) alternative, making a mat of small rounded green leaves turning rich purple/red/bronze tones in winter. Small light yellow Honeysuckle flowers are sprinkled throughout. Very cool.
Twinberry Honeysuckle. This the southern variant of our native shrubby Honeysuckle which here in Washington has tubular yellow flowers but down in southern Oregon and California, these flowers are little firecrackers of orangish-red. Tough plant liking wet sites but quite tolerant of drier spots. Hummers like this!
This is a dynamite cultivar also called 'Florida' but names aside, the flowers totally rock. White and dark red fragrant flowers marry nicely with the rich purple-tinted foliage. We keep ours trimmed to an informal shrub but it can be a vigorous vine. Nice orange fruit.
Gold Chilean Myrtle. This outrageous evergreen shrub is best suited for mild gardens such as the urban heat sink of Seattle, against a wall or near the water. Fragrant white early summer flowers, cinnamon peeling bark, pink tints on the new growth, blue-black edible but insipid fruit.
A selection we imported via Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy from the UK that was propagated from plants which survived the prolonged Big Freeze of December 2010. An event like this winnows the posers and despite the horrors, is a great opportunity to assess which plants have some unforeseen hardiness genetics. Evergreen shrub to small tree with gorgeous exfoliating cinnamon colored bark, white fragrant flowers and edible blue-black fruit. A portion of the proceeds goes to support the mission of Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy.
Our plant was gifted to us by Kenton Seth of crevice garden fame who also happens to be a keen plantsman. This is native to the coastal areas of the West coast where it is found in moist meadows and along streams where it can naturalize in gravel bars. Blue and white flowers are awesome for pollinators. It will tire out after a few short years but save seed or let it naturalize via self-sowing.
Dwarf form of this evergreen sun perennial with cheerfully fluffy double white flowers somewhere between a pom-pom and a many-pointed star which rebloom from early spring onwards with deadheading and are further complemented by maroon tinted basal foliage. Plays nice with it's smaller sister 'Petite Jenny' or perhaps half-sister as this one seems to have gained some French parentage.
A sport of 'Jenny' found at Bressingham Gardens in England. This is a compact and dwarf double pink flowered perennial mound of delight. The main display is May-June but there is some rebloom clear into Fall. The double flowers are sterile so there is none of that pesky reseeding which can be an issue with Lychnis. Zone 6b and sun.
Our selection from near the extirpated location of a dwarf population above Carbonado relayed to us by NW plant legend Edith Dusek. This has proved to be very atypical in that it produces a zillion crowns in a single plant, A one gallon pot plant had 50 divisions, a large garden clump over a thousand. Smaller than lowland clones.
White Skunk Cabbage. Beautiful Asian version of our familiar Skunk Cabbage. Big white flowers are a knockout and they don't smell bad - what a bonus! Good rich moist soil or boggy spot.
Potentially the first offering of this plant in the US we brought this back from Far Reaches sister city Pan-Global Plants, the stellar nursery of plantsman Nick Macer who wild collected these in Guizhou. Very unique look with dark green rosettes of leaves centered by a cluster of yellow flowers, will slowly spread to form a truly special groundcover Broader and fewer leaflets than the more often seen var. stenophylla.
Superb form collected in NE Yunnan at 1900 metes by perhaps the preeminent modern plant hunter, Jens Nilsen. The list of 'firsts' in Jens' history of collections is astounding. This collection is not a first but is notable for being an exceptional form. Larger in all parts than previous introductions with gold flowers in midsummer.
An interesting Asian Lysimachia which we have not yet identified. These genus is widespread and varied in Asia with over 170 species and varieties in China alone. It is so much easier to key out monotypic genera where there is but a single species. This is from lower elevations and we have not trialed it outside yet but looks frost sensitive. A charming little evergreen Lysimachia with lovely dark rounded ovate leaves on slightly kinky stems. Probably kinked stems would be more accurate but kinky sells. Small yellow flowers are borne over many weeks and all is in a harmonious scale. Growing with Disporopsis aspersa, Mahonia, Ligustrum, and Ophiopogon which are all hardy here in zone 8a so we will say the same for this without outside trials.
Shrubby little Gesneriad (African Violet family) which will form multiple stems to a foot or so tall with lots of funnel-shaped light lavender-white flowers with throats lined in dark veins. Kind of reminds us of one of the subshrubby Monkeyflowers in a way. Best kept from frost but easy inside over winter. This is widespread in China dipping into Vietnam and jumping over to Taiwan and Japan ranging from 1000' to 7200' stems 3" to 4' tall. There seems to be one form commonly in cultivation which is the glabrous var. pauciflorus and obviously the hardy alpine 3" tall form as well as the subtropical 4 footer needs to be introduced! Sounds like a sponsorship opportunity for a collecting expedition by the Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy in case there is a generous gesneriafficinado out there despairing over the paucity of available diversity in Lysionotus pauciflorus.
Here's something good for zone 9 or a conservatory or a move in and out plant. This is a very fun Gesneriad from northern Vietnam collected by Josh McCullough from an area that likely sees some frost although we wouldn't put it to any severe test! This has late season large trumpets (if trumpets had an inflated tube) of pink/white flowers. Glossy green foliage, this would be a classic epiphyte growing on mossy or humus covered boulders and even in trees. This has been very easy for us in our cool greenhouse kept just above freezing in the winter, This would love the Bay Area!
Found growing a shady mossy rock (much the situation I would choose if I were a plant) in North Vietnam this creeping semi-woody Gesner has some of the best foliage we've seen from the genus with purple-pink petioles, margins, and abaxial surfaces. No recollection of the flower but you can expect the usual dangling elongated foxglove corollas. For the tropical greenhouse or the coastal climate.
This subshrubby gesneriad from Yunnan-Vietnam border region is in a favorite genus and we have yet to see a Lysionotus that we don't like. Evergreen foliage on semi-woody stems with creeping creeping stems which help to solidify its grip on the mossy trunks of trees or on rocky outcrops. Long wiry pedicels hold oversized tubular white flowers nicely appointed in longitudinal pink stripes. Best frost-free.
This Central American epiphytic blueberry relative calls the cloud forests home and enjoys cool conditions with no frost. Brilliant red new growth, tubular soft red flowers with red calyces followed by darkly intriguing fruit. Will develop a caudiform lignotuber in time. This is a visual feast for months on end.
