Our collection of a good dark violet-pink version of this widespread Asian Allium. A very easy plant in the garden getting up to 20" tall and having the added bonus of being edible should emergency rations be needed. We had originally described this as being light pink based on some pale October flowers lingering in the cold mists clinging to the mountain but fortunately these turned out different in a very positive way.

Our collection at 9000' from the summit of highest peak in the Wuming Shan in SW China. This Allium was prevalent in the grazed grass and scrub summit with tall 12"-20" scapes and nice 2"+ half dome pink flowers. The local minority people harvest the bulbs for food. This was the first Western botanical foray to this mountain.

A good dark flowered form of Allium wallichii from China. Although the individual florets are fewer in number in the flower heads, the rich dark purple color more than compensates. This species is eaten by the local indigenous peoples although that wild crafting is becoming less frequent as grocery stores are awfully convenient. An easy species for the garden.

One of the hardiest of the Aloes, this will withstand short drops into the upper teens but will appreciate shelter against a sunny wall under an eave where it will produce orange flowers for months on end. Cute little hardy Aloe we got from our friend Jeff Erickson. This makes a tight clump of rosettes and has a 8"-12" stem of soft orange tubular flowers in summer. This is hardy in milder gardens here especially grown in a sunny bed under the eves where it gets winter rain protection and benefits from some heat from the house.

One of the hardier Aloes or former Aloe. This will survive winters in warmer Zone 8 gardens making a multi-stemmed shrub with terminal spires of orange-yellow showy flowers. If a cold freeze occurs, this will be cut to the base but will rapidly regrow come spring. Best to mulch prior to such an event.

Quite the stunner and a selection we don't think is available here in the US as this is one we have brought back from the United Kingdom although it doesn't seem too united at the moment. Very clean white margins to the green leaves which clad the 2' stems with very pleasing burnt orange flowers. Not aggressive and good tolerance to cold. Just a few.

A fine variegated selection originating at Cally Gardens in Scotland and given to us by the late Michael Wickenden who named it. Michael was a plantsman of the keenest sort and he is sorely missed. Good clean cream margins on the young leaves which turns white as the foliage matures. The variegation plays well with the red flowers atop the two foot stems. We reckon this is the first introduction of this choice plant to the US.

This is a surprisingly hardy Brazilian species. Good cut flower with long clean stems. We've had this growing happily outside for years and going through single digits in winter with mulch. We got this from Maggie at Western Hills some years ago and finally can offer this goody. She said this was a hybrid by noted California breeder Fred Meyer between the vining Bomarea and the non-vining Alstroemeria, and we have sold it in the past as Alstroemeria x Bomarea 'Fred Meyer' and more recently as Bomarea "Fred Meyer". The great thing about putting a plant on the internet is that all sorts of smart people read about it and very nicely suggest the correct name.

A serious bit of yellow on this rock garden gem. The dome of small silver leaves is completely obscured by the mass of yellow flowers in May and June here. We let ours go to seed so we can enjoy more seedlings. This is visually nearly identical to three other distantly related species in the Mediterranean and may reflect parallel evolution from similar habitats. Very good drainage. low organic matter component and dry conditions.

As perennials go, this Mexican Pea Tribe member is staggeringly impressive. From a woody base, there appears in spring stout stems reaching 8 feet.. On a mature plant, these stems are numerous and it becomes a dominant seasonal shrub. Pinnate leaves with 4 leaflets, large discoidal purple-veined stipules and big yellow flowers in fall. If we were completely honest with ourselves, it is a safe bet that we all love large discoidal purple-veined stipules but we might not mention that to our parents at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

A collection from China of this surpirisingly hardy gesneriad whose identity remains a mystery. This was growing on a mountain summit in a shaded area with hard limestone outcrops coated in thick moss which proved ideal conditions for this little gem. Our crevice garden excites a lot of visitors into experimenting with alpines and crevice planters, if you find yourself with a similar urge we highly recommend this as one of your gateway plants. Offering what's best about alpines, diminutively cute little plants with outsize floral firepower, but without a lot of the hassle and strife that cultivating them can bring. While they still want excellent drainage and fairly goldilocks temperatures they are much more forgiving than many others. When happy they will spread to form a nice mat, and a sea of pink pom-pom flowerheads.

Sometimes simple is best, shocking coming from this bastion of maximalism and specialization we know, but its hard not to love an approachable friendly face in an intimidating crowd. This species is that friendly face for the at-times daunting world of alpine and rock gardening, adaptable and charismatic with it's primula-like flowers. This little Euro delicacy comes from the legendary Aberconwy nursery, one of two selections bred to combine the compact habit of the white-flowered 'Doksa' with the usual bright pink form. This one favors saturation of color over extreme dwarfness but is still quite compact. A little specialist and a lot cute, a welcome addition for the beginner and the erudite expert.
