We love this variety of nobilis - awesome foliage with very good marbling and equally fine pink flowers in early spring. To find fault with this bit of botanical jewelry would be to put on display character defects so profound that your friends would desert you in droves while making plans for your involuntary institutional incarceration. Very choice selection not often available but we have some very nice plants. This has soft blue flowers in profusion during those often grim early spring days. This is an overachiever in the shade garden as it is a good grower and will make a sizable clump which just means lots more flowers. It all works out nicely.
To want more than 'Blue Jewel" is just wrong. This selection of one of the premier spring stalwarts subscribes to the theory that "more is better" and overwhelms with a myriad of small dark blue flowers. In this case, Miles Davis was wrong when he said "Less is more". He didn't garden. More is more.
These were shared with us by Kelly's mentor and fair to say, hero, the late Steve Doonan of Grand Ridge Nursery. A superb selection with petaloid stamens giving this a robust doubled appearance. Always hard to come by and much sought after, this will in time make a nice carpet of ostentation of which we were at first embarrassed by our display of excess but we have managed to come to terms with it. These are multi-eyed divisions potted this winter so there won't be much for roots until they start growing this spring but will be nice plants. We would like to save them until they are fully rooted out but they always sell here before that happens so we have listed them with the root caveat.
Originally from Lithuanian wild-collected seed this strain was selected for it's dark botanical-blue flowers rather than the usual pale color of the species. An uncommon gem that seems to originate from Seneca Hill nursery. We've found the transsilvanicas to be good growers and flower-ers so worth adding to the collection even amidst other blue-flowering species.
Fabulous hybrid Hepatica that in time will form mats of great lobed foliage with loads of light medium blue flowers in early spring. A durable plant with few if any faults. Great with Ranunculus ficaria and Hellebores.
This coveted form has white flowers with a fully visible striking pink reverse to the backs of the petals. The leaves which follow bloom are impressive in their own right being quite large with rounded lobes and rich purple-maroon undersides. A plant of this in your garden will forever mark you as a discerning plant nerd. Ultimate hardiness is not known but ours has weathered 8F in our shade garden no problem.

A Schefflera of smaller stature with a need to please. This flowers when quite young with spherical clusters of creamy-white flowers followed by even showier balls of black fruit. Of narrow habit, this is a good choice for smaller, mild gardens.
A reintroduction of this rare species that has been introduced just once by Steve Hootman in 1995. This is from the same population but does provide a bit more genetic diversity as the ones cultivated from the 1995 introduction come from just one or two plants. Hardy in Seattle. Perhaps the most attractive of the many Scheffleras we grow with its dusty pinkish-purple petioles and multiple tiers of leaflets (unusually good floral display as well from which one assumes it takes its name). This combined with the usual jurassic looking stems and graceful chandelier canopy that attracts us so hopelessly to the genus is almost too much to bear. This is easily evidenced by our insistence on toting in and out of the greenhouse each year a massive display pot housing one of these handsome beasts. This smaller Schefflera is a very ornamental species from our collection northern Vietnam from a mountain previously unexplored by westerners. A bold plant of 12' forming part of the species-dense broad-leaf forest margins on the incredibly steep slopes of a mountain previously not visited by westerners to our knowledge. It was a long day's climb which ended in the dark with rain and wind on a bare ridge hoping the tent didn't blow away with us in it. Fortunately, after 20+ miles and 5800' feet elevation gain, sleep came easy! Broad leaves with up to 14 leaflets held on petioles touched in red. Cream flowers and black fruit on dendritic panicles. Young plants of a rare offering of this graceful woodland species from the borderlands of China and Vietnam. Upright plants to 10' that rarely branch with expected Schefflera - we mean Heptapleurum - green leaves. Umbels of black fruit in a raceme. Hardiness unknown but let's start with not very. A 2012 Chinese collection of one of our favorite Schefflera species (and Schefflera is a favorite genus!) remarkable for its second layer of leaflets and tendency to be extremely floriferous with globose white flowers aplenty. This was a small multi-trunked tree in the wild and is shaping up to be very similar in our collector's garden where it was knocked back by a particularly cold winter but has excelled since.
A favorite of ours from South Africa. We have this growing in front of our greenhouse and the first winter we mulched it and covered with a tarp. No damage. The second winter we just threw a tarp over it and no damage. Then finally we didn't protect it at all and there was no damage at 17F - even the flower buds were unscathed. Yellow daisy flowers are lovely over the glaucous succulent foliage.
A seedling selection named by us for the extra large flowers which when compared to others, is not only beyond the pale ones but all others as well. Signaling the end of summer, the September-October flowers of the palest pink are similar to the cultivar 'Pallida' but bigger so of course it has to be better. These will be ecstatic in rich, moist soil in a sunny position. Used to be Schizostylis.
