Pink Willow Gentian. Thanks to Claire Cockroft for sharing these with us so we can pass them along to you. Choice and scarce pink form of one of the classic fall blooming gentians, this develops into a robust plant with many arching stems ranked with pink flowers. An easy wow.

Our collection from a wet alpine meadow in Sichuan at 10,000 feet where this mingled with lepidote Rhododendrons, Primula and Polygonum. A tantalizing array of forms of sino-ornata, but this one's veitchiorum gestalt with its dark blue flowers and somewhat broader foliage kept resisting positive ID, so we are open as always to outside confirmation. Pretty sure there are no papillae on the stems but have not taken a lens to them, so likely just a good dark sino-ornata. Amazing how running a nursery cuts into your hand lens time!

Rich deep blue trumpets with exterior pale striping on this collection from a 10,000' alpine moist meadow where it mingled with too many Primula, dwarf Rhododendron and a Bistorta that unexpectedly threatened to steal the show. This requires rich, moist acid soil with afternoon shade in hot sun areas.

Excellent selection of this species in the acaulis group which has large flowers of a particularly good dark blue on long stems well, long for this species anyway. Evergreen mats in rich moist soil in full sun with main bloom in spring and some rebloom in late summer. Endangered species in its native Balkan Dinaric Alps.

A tough perennial from the southern Caucasus which has steadfastly refused to die despite some of our unintentional best efforts. This will, in time, make an impressive small clump of numerous upright stems to 12" or so which are tipped in late July to September with multiple blue flowers with pale whitish throats. This is happy in limestone conditions and is happy here in neutral to moderately acid. It wants to please. Does well in Denver Botanic Gardens as well as gardens in Sweden.

Exceptional color form on this compact selection of this very hardy Gentian. Big magenta buds open to purple-pink flowers in late August to October giving your garden a kick in the pants when other plants are packing it in for the year. Small enough to work in containers.

We love the Asiatic Gentians and want them all as they are easy, hardy and put on such a show in late summer/early fall. We were thrilled to get this one from our friend Urs of Edelweiss Nursery who brought this in from a German gentian specialist. Not your typical blue, this has white flowers with pale yellowish stripes. Moist and sun.

Our collection of this as yet unidentified Gentian from an isolated peak with difficult access. This was growing on steep open banks overhung with Schefflera fengii and Rhododendron sinofalconeri where it made rounded small shrublets with semi-woody stems covered in clusters of shades of blue flowers.

Asiatic Gentian with big deep blue trumpets on this mat forming beauty. Rich moist acidic soil is best for this late sumer-fall bloomer. Outrageous in bloom and this will quickly, for an Asiatic Gentian, make a nice dense patch as it roots along the stems. Not a thug, nor invasive or a problem - this a good thing. Moist acidic soil in full sun is just the ticket.

A free-flowering, lower carpeting form of this choice species that is ideal in the rock garden and one we acquired from our friends at Rumbling Bridge Nursery in Scotland. This Croatian native has a tidy personna, showy mauve-pink flowers and small leaves coloring well in winter. When we say carpeting, it's more of a place mat.

Our collection from Yunnan of this intriguing hardy Geranium. Nice foliage faintly mottled in spring and copious sprays of small pink flowers infused with lavender. The petals are reflexed strongly back like the flowers of a Dodecatheon and the nose of the flower is whiskered in white..

A rare dwarf Geranium with sizeable pink flowers. Perfect for the rock garden or special nook. This stays very short - just inches high - making a dense little mass of attractive foliage above which is displayed the very nice pink flowers. Quite tough despite its size.

Absolute rock hardy jewel from Lebanon and Syria. Well. it's rock hardy here anyway - we know that means something entirely different in Minot. This is perfect for our area as it is winter growing and summer dormant so our Mediterranean dry summers feels a lot like home to it. Surprisingly, it has been very tolerant of being watered all the time while dormant so it is more cosmopolitan than one might guess its geography. Blooms in late spring with lots of lavender-blue flowers on stems up to 18" and after flowering it disappears until Fall. Not often available and we have the inimitable John Flintoff to thank for sharing this with us.

A white flowered variant of this familiar Geranium whose flowers are backed by a green calyx rather than pink which adds to its overall indispensable lightness of being. The paler than normal green leaves accentuate this and makes this valuable for brightening a somber corner or tempering hotter colors. This was found on Mt Olympus in Greece on a Ness Botanic Garden Expedition and introduced by the same. We should have thought more about our name - 'White-Far' 'Far White' 'White Reach' 'Reach White' just doesn't get it - those Brits one-up us on plants again - buggers! This will handle dry shade to mostly sun and is nearly a mythic plant for those tough places and somehow thrives under the regime of absentee gardening.

We acquired this incredibly tough, tuberous, summer dormant Geranium in the 80's from East Lambrook in southern England which was home to Margery Fish and the original English Cottage Garden. Provenance alone is merit enough but good lavender blue flowers and drought tolerance carries the day.

Our collection from the the summit of Guizhou Province's highest mountain in the southern Wumengshan. This was an area of severe deforestation and grazing but we secured 5 seeds of this very nice pink flowered species hiding at the edge of a boulder in the cropped turf and after propagation, can now offer this rare and possibly new to cultivation beauty. We have been thrilled with the performance of this in our garden where it grows at the foot of a large Baptisia where it wends it way through the stems to 3' tall and fronts the Baptisia with a skirt of pink flowers for going on three months. It is actually giving the Baptisia a bit of a complex because the Baptisia flowers for about a week and takes up a lot of space while meantime the Geranium is just a little energizer bunny.

A smaller Geum from the UK with flowers of a gentle soft yellow shot through with apricot veining. Our stock comes from the distinguished Hedgerows Nursery who bestowed us their plants of this upon their retirement and what a boon! It made all those farewells pints well worth the expense. A low grower well suited for growing near a path.

Awesome Geum rivale hybrid from Yorkshire plantsman Geoffrey Smith which we brought back from Binny Plants in Scotland some years ago and can now offer a few from division. This has a refinement lacking in the newer in-your-face hybrids which we quite appreciate. Nodding coppery-pink flowers straighten out becoming soft pink. This is the correct clone as opposed to mislabeled plants from Holland.

A lovely Geum we brought in from Scotland and at last have a few to share. A smaller plant with flower stems to just 10"-12" tall holding soft pink flowers whose petal edges are toothed and feathered in an enchanting frill. A color that blends gently with others and well able to stand out on its own merits. We struggle to find fault.

Did we mean to infer that this is a PINK Gillenia???? Why yes, we did. And it is. Pink, definitely pink. An exciting offering of a dandy variant on a choice eastern native. Pink Bowman's Root will get 24"-30" tall with multiple stems sporting an airy array of pink flowers. The leaf color will be improved and intensified with some sun and great fall color to boot. This can take full sun in our cool-sun maritime Northwest but part sun to shade in hotter areas. These are hefty plants field-grown for two years from the plug size one sees generally offered and are a cut above. Bringing the action on this one.
