Quite the distinctive Grevillea being a true groundcover growing very flat to the ground. The oak-like leaves are bronze when young and mature to a dark green both colors providing a fine backdrop for the large feathery combs of red flowers. This is likely not hardy below the mid teens but is grown successfully at the Barca garden on Whidbey Island in a raised bed against a south facing wall and also is luxuriant at the Miller Botanic Garden in Seattle where it flows down a slope and where curator Richie Steffen gave us our cuttings. Sun and good drainage and low phosphorous if you do fertilize. At least this is easy to cover being flat in the event of a severe cold snap!
Here in Port Townsend Coastal Californians are like the bogey man haunting the dreams of NIMBY types and work-a-day home searchers alike. However in our rain-shadow deertopia, plants resistant to roaming teeth and the occasional drought are like affordable multi-unit housing. Thus we come to be selling this Cali native, and a prostrate large-flowered form to boot. The thick evergreen (in mild winters) foliage forms a tough mat producing odd buds that secrete a sticky gum that transform into a carpet of large yellow daisies in Summer, providing an adaptable full-sun groundcover.
The pure white flowering form of this hardy gateway drug gesner. Has everything the die-hards love about the genus with the leathery evergreen rosettes and amiably nodding open faced flowers. Happy on rock or in a sharply drained situation. Divisions off of seed grown plants from the original clone.
Needle Bush. Ouch! What the Hell???? Yes, it's sharp and not recommended for the Children's Play Garden or Horticultural Therapy Garden but a must for the Plant Nerd Garden, Mediterranean Style or Garden of Wicked Delight. Takes wet or dry, sun to part shade, can grow to 12' with white flowers. It's in the Protea family so easy on the phosphorous.
