Chameleon Vine. Crazy evergreen vine from the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina which only very recently was found to mimic the plants upon which it grows. The leaves increase or decrease in size, get darker or lighter, broader or narrower depending on its host or nearby plant. Flowers are insignificant on this science project.

A gorgeous begonia growing near small cardamom plantings along the trail in the forest heading to higher elevations. Fantastic foliage with dark and sultry clouding and with undersides a vivid red and held by similarly colored stems furred in pale hairs. The white flowers contrast perfectly.

Eye-catching species from China with palmate leaves spritzed with white on top and a bright maroon underneath. The pink flowers are just another layer of adornment which always come as a bit of a surprise to us as we are always completely satisfied with the leaves alone. Another surprise is the hardiness which is zone 8. If winter is going to push the lower limits of that zone for any length of time, be a bud and take care of your homie with a little mulch. This is slow to go in the spring, waiting until June but it catches right up.
An recently described (2018) Hinkley collection in eastern Arunachal Pradesh. A staggeringly good foliage plant fully clad in large deeply divided leaves and sporting yellow flowers - such a nice departure from pink! These admittedly mingle within the foliage and teasingly tantalize in their allure. Hardy in mild Z8b gardens with a deep airy mulch. With many herbaceous "hardy" begonias, hardy as long as the rhizomes and crown don't freeze!
A rare wild-origin offering of this hardy-for-us species. This develops stout vertical stems which hold palm-like leaves consisting of 8 narrow green leaflets. The late-season pink flowers ignite the pleasure centers which had been happily simmering all summer from the foliar architecture. Nice to introduce some new genetics of this species. A rare grand foliage plant from lower elevation in the eastern Sino-Himalaya. Allied to Schefflera, this differs in its armor of spiny prickles and whose terminal inflorescense produces black fruit. We offer this with some trepidation in fear of sparking a feeding frenzy among the Araliaceae collectors who are a particular subset of plant nerds that walk the knife edge of obsession that separates reason from Poe's " A Descent into a Maelstrom". Before you knee-jerk and click add to cart, take your meds and wait an hour. Of course this may well be sold out by then.......... A portion of the proceeds goes to support the mission of Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy.
A perennial (usually anyway) thistle relative from South Africa which makes a multicrowned clump of softly spiny leaves which by themselves merit nothing more than a good hosing of Roundup but the large purplish flowers are the swan emerging from the ugly duckling.
Long my favorite Bergenia with large upright broad paddles of leaves which turn the best maroon in the winter of any in the genus. Oh sure, the dark pink flowers are good in spring but this plant is one of the few reasons I look forward to winter. Galanthus for contrast - oh my.

A collection by plantsman Nick Macer of Pan Global Plants of this choice species which has awaited introduction since Frank Kingdon Ward first discovered it over 70 years ago. Striking deeply lobed palmate leaves held on long spotted stems with late season pink flowers. Visually arresting clump, to be honest. Overwintered in a Seattle garden with a wee bit of bark mulch during the heinous winter of 2021-22 which took out a variety of hitherto untouched plants. Mulch crown to prevent frost from penetrating during winter.
One of the very best woodland plants from China. This Ranunculaceae Family memeber has evergreen rounded glossy leaves evoking some exotic wild ginger. The plant forms a tidy dense clump with lots of comparatively tall stems bristling with puffs of white flowers. Moist soil is best.
Fricking taxonomists - we were so happy with Scilla scillioides. Choice and seldom offered Chines/Japan/Korean bulb that flowers in late summer with 10"-15" stems of Scilla-like pinkish-lavender flowers without the distraction of its grassy leaves. Pretty cool and easy naturalizer that we can finally offer.
Another one of those shouldn't-be-hardy-but-is begonias. This comes from SW China and does fine here in moist shaded gardens especially if you mulch it during that arctic blast we can get. Excellent long-fingered foliage to 18" tall cloak the pink flowers which are a nice hidden surprise in late summer.
A pleasantly architectural plant with upright stems piercing a succession of single leaves topped with a small constellation of flowers, marked by a star-like collection of sepals in which the several inconspicuous-but-charming flowers lie. The overall effect is very sunny and would go great in a meadow-esque setting with fellow Apiaceae members or the like. Not to mention this is one cool customer, hardy down to -35 Fahrenheit, making it cold tolerant anywhere in the continental US!
A very distinct form of this species which was collected in Nepal by Tony Schilling and shared with us by David Mason of Hedgerows Nursery. A good spreader rather than a clumper, the rounded ping-pong paddle leaves offer much as a small-scale groundcover. White to tinged pink flowers in early summer. Deciduous to semi-deciduous, we are inordinately fond of this collection and have it planted at the entrance to our shade garden. This particular collection is quite rare in the trade. Tony used to be the director at Wakehurst and David was deputy director so the chain of provenance custody is just how we like it.
A Mexican collection of one of these charismatic vining Alstroemeria relatives from FRBC board member Cody Hinchliff. Expect the usual fiery hued flower clusters that make us so addicted to this genus and hopefully a little more hardiness than usual given their being found at 9600' amidst pine forest, let us know!
Dramatic Bergenia from legendary OR nurseryman Russell Graham and we have named it so in appreciation and to keep this clone distinct. One of the most frustrating plants in our garden, not for us but for pleading customers as we've never offered it. Deciduous leaves up to a rounded square foot and white-pink flowers.
A collection by Hinkley from Myanmar at 9000' of this handsome species with nicely patterned leaves. Pink flowers. Hardiness is unknown but would guess a warm zone 8 with a good winter blanket of mulch in colder zone 8 at least until more is known.
A Great Plant Pick, and rightly so because this performs in the garden. Thin spikes of soft pink flowers are held nicely upright, more so than many other cultivars and pair wonderfully with the bold green foliage to create a ethereal pinkish floral haze above the bulwark of green. Not weedy or aggressive, this is good.
A very handsome hardy tuberous Begonia with orange flowers of which it is obviously very proud of as it is not shy about displaying them. This makes a nice clump and can be left in the garden over winter. Good in containers although I wouldn't let the pots freeze solid. Increases well.
